From an environmental standpoint alone front plates should be eliminated.
There is the life cycle environmental costs of the plate itself and the slight decrease in aero efficiency times a 2 million + vehicles.
Are you running a front plate on either of yours?

especially if you are in toronto expect to be pulled over at least once a week for no front plate

I live in Toronto and have never been pulled over for no front plate in my 10+ years of not having one. Even when I’ve stopped for RIDE checks, the officers have never said anything.

But I think that's going to change in many regions with the introduction of ALPR. Prior to this, I wouldn't have cared much and would have taken my chances. Also, I confirmed with my insurance company (Desjardins) that multiple tickets for no plate (I.e. Non-moving violation) will start to impact rates. Previously they did not. Not sure about other insurance companies but I'm sure many will follow suit.

It's possible. I'll guess we'll have to wait and see. I know that ALPR systems mounted in vehicles are designed primarily to track rear license plates since not all jurisdictions have front plates, rear plates are usually cleaner and have less damage, and it's easier to get stable and clear photos when both vehicles are moving in the same direction.

I had a TPS officer at a RIDE check tell me that he only tickets people for no front plates "if they're doing something dumb" or if they have lots of other violations on their record.

If I start getting tickets then yeah, I'll put on a front plate but until then I'll drive without one.

The newer ALPR systems (as of late last year/early this year) have forward and rear facing HD cameras. So they are picking up EVERYTHING now unfortunately. I confirmed with a Halton Region PO (supervisor) and he said they are getting hits on both front and back infractions...but that it was easier to go after the rear infraction since they would be behind you already. Total money grab especially since it was recently announced that Ontario is getting rid of the manual online plate renewal (which was probably 75% of the hits the ALPR were getting).

I wonder if the system will alert them if a vehicle behind them has no front plate. As I said earlier, I'll have to see how it goes. Personally, I would have much preferred getting rid of front plates as opposed to doing away with license renewals but at least the nice thing about traffic tickets is that they're opt in. If I want to stop getting tickets for no front plate I just have to put one on.

Yes, my understanding is that it flags no plate. Now whether they follow up on that car to run the rear plate is another story. Having no plate definitely puts you on their radar though, although you could just be out of province (that doesn't require a front plate).

I completely agree with you though, they should have kept the stickers and ditched the front plate. I would have GLADLY paid for an annual sticker renewal and been able to run plate free.

Honestly, I would have even paid a premium for that.

Does the 407 ever use the front plate for non-transponder vehicles? Wondering if there is some agreement with the 407 Corp. to keep front plates.

407 cameras are only setup to scan the rear plates.

From what I can recall, a lot of the push back on removing front plates comes from police agencies.

That's exactly right. Ford wanted them gone but the OPP made such a fuss about keeping them (gotta keep the ticket revenue coming in!).

I've had my G80 for about a year now and been pulled over twice in the Toronto area for no front plate.

First time was a road check before entering the highway and it was just within a few weeks of having the car and I told them I had just picked up the car and was waiting to get PPF done before putting the plate on so they let it slide.

Second time was in downtown Toronto just as I pulled out of underground parking and they gave me a ticket - planning to take it to court and just show them I got a license plate on the front now with some pictures, but I took the plate off again after the pictures. I still haven't gotten a court date yet and its been about 7 months now lol.

I think if you keep an eye out for the cops and hide behind other traffic when you see them you can avoid a ticket, for a while at least.

14 months of ownership. No front plate.

But, I live in Ottawa and we’re so close to Quebec that I’m sure police officers see many cars without front plates that they can’t be bothered.

I assume I’ll get a ticket if/when I get stopped for another reason.
