I have had a similar sound with my 2021 g80M. It's getting warmer here and haven't been able to get it on video yet. Definitely temperature related and seems it needs to be below 30 degrees.

Would love others to take their cars in to dealers to see what the diagnosis comes out to be and if similar action is taken to what they did with mine. They were great and persistent to get it sorted out and thought they nailed it, unfortunately here we are again lol

I brought up the squealing noise to the dealer last year and they said it was normal. Maybe I will have them check it again.

I just find it interesting that some don't have this sound. My coworker has a 2022 m4 and has not noted any sounds in around ~9000 miles. Maybe it is normal but why would my dealer try to diagnose and replace parts ? Interesting

The sound usually happens when it’s very cold outside. If you are in a warmer climate, you probably won’t experience this problem.

Mine does this but only in very cold temps (< 10F). I haven’t done anything about it because it’s happened ~5 times this winter in MN

Had the same squeal here in UK when it was cold about 14 Deg F.
Been ok since, sounds like it’s normal.

I brought mine in and of course it wasn’t making the sound. It’s also warm here now. I believe it’s the breather making the noise. For those of you still hearing it try opening the oil cap to see if it goes away.

Pcv system. On the n55 most of the time if you hear a whistle it was the valve cover. Which the pcv system was incorporated in. Look up whistling on a n55 and see if the sound is not similar.

Just broke below 30 here and had the car parked outside overnight (2021 G80), same squealing noise I heard last year, lasted 10 seconds or so. Will get it on video and upload next time I can. anyone every solve this issue?

Never did have this completely fixed. They replaced my Accessory belt and claimed that fixed it, heard the noise briefly last year and then it warmed up for the year. We are now getting colder again and will see if it returns. I park mine in a garage but do not drive it every day.

This sound is certainly back. Just started it up this morning after sitting for 2 days. It was in the upper 30's Fahrenheit. Sound persisted for around 15 seconds until the RPM's dropped.

It is pretty loud and sounds out of place coming from a car like this. I have had my car in the shop numerous times, this accounts for a few of the visits. Whenever I take it in, weather does not cooperate.

Mine does the exact same thing. Has happened two winters in a row but goes away with warmer weather.

Just adding to this thread that I'm also experiencing the same thing. I agree that it's correlated with the temp dropping below 30 degrees F. Slight whine upon startup for ~ 5 seconds.

Anyone else besides me taken it in to be diagnosed? My dealer replaced the belt tensioner and belt last year thinking it fixed it. Can confirm it did not as it still makes that sounds in certain temps/humidity. I truly do not know what it is and I am decently mechanically inclined.

I’ve had my X3M almost 3 years and have never heard that kind of squeal, even when really cold outside
