You'll be able to tell a 6MT from a mile away thanks to the badging

One of the great things about driving a manual/6MT is knowing that you are, at this point, in a very exclusive club of purists and dedicated drivers. It goes without saying that 6MT drivers are the better drivers (and the better looking drivers).

Reflecting on the barrage of information these past 3 weeks, my favorite takeaway is that due to the way the models are split, with the Base getting the 6MT and the silver M3/M4 badge, and the Competition getting the 8AT and the Black M3/M4 badge, it is now possible to tell from a distance whether a car is a 6MT or a slush box.

Some of us may get black M3/M4 badges but I don't think any of us with disgrace our 6MT purchase with a Competition Badge.

Then again, we will also be easily discernable from the 8AT crowd because we'll be a quarter mile behind them in any race.

Instead of peering into the window you will see it on the badge, good point.

I think BMW missed an opportunity to go with some other features on the base, making it a little more special as was rumored with the "Pure Model". It could have been an opportunity to differentiate the car, IMO.

A Carrera T type of method that Porsche did with the 991.2 vs the 991.2 S.

Easiest way for me remain the sound at upshift. I really can’t stand the AT or DCT upshift sound. It’s much faster but it still sounds farty and lazy vs a crisp MT upshift.

Does it really matter if people know the MT's from the AT's at this point?

I moved on recently from the M's but I never really cared what other people bought since the majority were auto. Knowing that mine was MT was enough for me.

No, but some us love to row our own gears and it is always fun to talk with someone that loves to do the same. I am just glad that there is still a manual on offer.

I'll say 2 things in response, as you raise a valid point:

1. Yes it matters. I get excited when I see another 6MT! I couldn't tell you why but it's the truth.

2. This post was not intended to be taken all that seriously.

Is there an M-Performance version? And is BMW M going with four //// now instead of the traditional three ///M?

It's a "tongue in cheek" post but it's also fact. You can now tell by the color do the badge if it's a manual transmission. I think that's awesome.

yea it will be hard to see when the 6MT are so far behind hahah good point

serious note, im glad they are sticking with the option, as that seems to be slowly disappearing. I enjoy both set ups, however as I get older I just prefer the auto.interesting observation about badge.

I'm in the same boat. Been driving stick for roughly 13 years now and think I'll be going the auto route for my next toy.

Don't do it man. I went auto for my M3 CS, arguably one of the best M3's ever made. I hate the f***ing thing. I am so bored.

That's what I'm worried about but I do enjoy driving some of these new auto Bimmers.

If I hate my CS, with all the cool aesthetic sh*t and the ridiculous handling, I think I would hate anything non-6MT.

Interesting observation about the badges, shame the Competition is auto-only though.

That might not be accurate if the extended shadowline adds the darker badge or vice versa for extended shadowline delete..... then all you will be left with is those tiny "competition" bars.... might need binoculars to pick those out at 1 mile!

In the IGTV video during which Markus Flasch premiered the car he said that all wheel options, seat options, color options, etc. are available on both the base and competition models. He said both cars are customizable, the one thing you can't change is the badge. I'm paraphrasing but he was specific.

I dunno... English isn't his first language so I wouldn't take every phrase exactly as spoken, could be interpreted as the competition badge vs std badge without "competition" bar is what can't be changed, not the color of the badge itself

"The only thing that's standing out on the competition that cannot be changed are the all black badges as we see in the front and also on the rear of the car."

It's around 9:34 of this video, and this graphic is displayed when he says it.
