Several years ago the downloads did not require the use of a smartphone, but were sent directly to your car. That ended somewhere around 2020 or 2021.

Yesterday while driving I received a notification that upgrade 11/2023/50 was in the process of downloading and would be ready for installation soon. I was rather surprised. When I got home it was ready for installation so I parked the car, set the parking brake, shut off the engine, and punched "install now". 10 minutes later I had 11/2023/50 without the need for a smartphone. It's about f..kin' time BMW.
Not having a smartphone by choice is certainly a take lol.

Regardless, the dealer can update you if you don't have access to perform it yourself anyway

Not mine unless you report a problem due to your current OS. I have since driven the car, and I am not happy with the update. The burbles while still there are noticeably softer in tone.

BMW isn't playing with "burbles" in iDrive security updates 4 years into a platform lifecycle.

I would double check your M button settings as it's possible something got reset during the update and that's why you are noticing a difference.

I really don't think so either but something seems to have happened. My M1 & M2 settings were partially changed but not completely. This of course is to be expected, and less than a minute in settings brings everything back including MDM. My media was completely turned off, but again quickly recovered. These are the only changes I have noticed with the exception of the burbles and possibly the exhaust.

The volume of the exhaust and perhaps the burbles too is controlled to a degree by the software by opening and closing the exhaust flaps. These are not just full open - full closed units, but are adjustable throughout their range by the software settings. Maybe a change was made here due to the relentless EU regs in search of a silent vehicle. I am sure that BMW makes only one software version, and not two separate ones for the EU and the US. So whatever they get, we get.

I fully agree. I did the update 2 days ago and burbles are much softer in Sport Plus mode. Especially when easing off the throttle at around 4k RPM. No burbles left in rhis RPM range. I have installed an Akrapovic exhaust, with manual flap control. Softer burbles in Sport Plus mode at stock settings and flaps fully open, than before the update. (Version 11/2023.73 // ASD fully deactivated )

this is my first time upgrading (with the m3) - I understand I'll have to redo my customizations within bimmercode which is fine - my question is will the ASD reactivate? or do I have to back in and fiddle with that too?

The code won't get reactivated, but the options in bimmercode will go back to "active"

Whether that re-enables any part of it, not sure, but it's easy to go in and just flip all them off again.

Finished updates and haven't noticed any changes, presets all remained. Granted I haven't been able to drive it since.

I received a notification that 11/2023.73 is available for my car, and the MyBMW app tells me that it has completed downloading it.

Now what do I need to do to get it transferred to my car?

The transfer is stuck at either 6% (or nothing) depending on whether or not the car is moving, and it's telling me that I should use the MyBMW app. Meanwhile the app says that it needs to be connected, even though shows that it already is connected with both Bluetooth and WiFi.

You have to drive it. Don't ask me why, running and idling won't do it. I'd say a solid 30 minute drive is enough.

For those stuck at 6%, go into idrive Data Privacy, and toggle the remote software upgrade on/off to clear it from being stuck. Once cleared goto to remote software upgrade in idrive and perform search upgrade (and have the phone connected too).

Hey BMW developers, allow the car to connect to a home wifi ssid and allow the damn car to download and perform the upgrade instead requiring phone which then transfers to car.

Or let us transfer it via a USB key. Or a simple transfer through the app while the car is parked, with a progress indicator.

Or literally anything other than the current bizarre, convoluted process!

I installed the update today and can confirm that the burbles are significantly softer. I have the valve controller, fully open in sports plus and the difference is noticeable. To me, this is a downgrade.
