Noticed Carplay UI improvements in iOS 17.4. At least while navigating via Apple Maps and using the map data in the instrument cluster, better turn information is presented. Overall nice improvement for me on ID8.

I updated to 17.4 and used the carplay upgrades this weekend. IMO, when you have the screens both on map, the "overall" map is way to far zoomed out to be useful and if that's the map you're showing on the gauge cluster, I don't see a way to zoom it in?

It's meant to be an "overview" of the route, switchable between the main screen and the cluster screen. I imagine the intended use is, if you keep it on the cluster screen, you have another app open on the main screen like Music or Podcasts.

My main issue is Maps will still pop up direction notifications on the main screen, since it's not in focus. Also there's no easy way to add or respond to reports since you need to go into the main screen map to do that anyway. I find myself not using it.

I was soooo looking forward to this update, only to find out it’s only for iDrive 8. I really hope it might become available on 7 too via a future update, but chances are slim.

Not exactly :
Apple Map (and only Apple Map) can send some informations in dash even before 17.4 on 7.
Maybe some others apps can now send informations on dash with 8.

This is an enhancement to the *map view* that is only supported on iD8. iD7 can only get direction and turn-by-turn data, this does not affect the functionality on iD7.

So far it’s terrible, the new map is zoomed very far out but more annoyingly it is locked to a north perspective rather than direction of travel.

Makes it very annoying and worse than pre-update

As explained in the update, the point is you switch it on the main screen to them have the traditional maps with directional information show zoomed in on the instrument cluster. You have one of them zoomed out, one of them zoomed in.

Like I said, I imagine the point of this is to be able to "switch" the main maps view to your instrument cluster so you can switch apps on the main screen to something else like music.

Another reason to like the iD8 over the id7.
I was not a fan of the giant tacked on screen of the iD8 until I had an XM loaner for about a week.
God, that huge screen made my iD7 look like an old 3G iphone after getting my car back from the dealer

Has anyone noticed when the instrument cluster is showing the overview map, at times it'll almost blink - I think its trying to resize/auto zoom itself, but it makes it very distracting when driving.

is there a way to go back to how it was prior to the update and just have a map without the overview?

Haven't noticed this, but no there's no way to regress the functionality. It's the same for everyone on 17.4 now. Perhaps this is going to be fixed with an imminent 17.4.1 due soon.
