I have a plug in Prius prime to do my 18,000 - 20,000 miles a year worth of commuting in. It's comfortable, economical, solo occupant carpool lane friendly, and gets roughly 800 miles to a tank with tons of driving assistance to make long commuting doable.

The M3 is my fun car. My weekend car. My "Ferrari". There's no way I would put 20,000 miles a year on a $100,000 car. Everyone's situation is different, though.

When I had my 2016 M3, I had a cheap Chevy EV I would use in carpool lane for carpool access here in CA (and also had my raptor).

My two cents anyway.
It's a Ferrari to me too. And I think that's what's at the heart of my concern. I fear that if I drive it every day for the most mundane tasks, it'll lose its specialness rather if I kept the frs for such things and also to remind me of the "lesser" alternative.

Putting miles on the car isn't so much my concern btw as I average less than 10k a year, but more so the idea that I'm killing a fly with a sledgehammer so to speak by driving a gas guzzling, 500-hp beast to and from my office at 24 mph alongside a fleet of Ford focuses, toyota prii, and Tesla mod3s. Id feel the same way driving a 6000 lb Yukon or H2 alone (which I know tons of people do).

The other issue for me is location. I can't drive the car for half the year because of winter and road salts. Currently I'm keeping my 13 STI for that but thinking of trading it in for a Jeep as a daily driver. I may drive the G82 more daily in the summer but then the Jeep with the top off may tip the scales too…

The bottom line for me is I bought the G82 to drive fast and have fun. Depending on what daily driving means to you in the covid era and beyond, personally I'd rather not be stuck in traffic with the G82. Not able/willing to drive fast in heavy traffic…

Exactly- my M3 will not sit in the garage. I live in Southern California. I can and will drive it any day I want- there's no weather to speak of here. My 90 mile round trip, mostly freeway commute, would do the M3 a disservice. It's not a fun drive. It's awful. Not to mention, I wouldn't commute in it due to no carpool lane access alone. That's what my 21 Prius Prime is for.
To those that have the income and/or simply don't care about having no warranty and no value left on their high mileage M3 or the like, good for you!
Some cars are made for fun, some are made to commute. I'm fortunate enough to have both (plus my wife's 19 RR sport). That being said, the M3 is for fun duties only. Not boring, traffic filled freeways. Whatever wear and tear and mileage mine will have will be obtained with a smile on my face, not freeway frustration.

Sorry to quote only yours- lol. More of a reply to all.

C&D got 22mpg overall but 32mpg at 75mph cruising... which is pretty incredible for a 500hp beast.

I'd rather be stuck in traffic in my G80 than a Prius.

Now if MPG and gas cost is the main consideration, then ok.

To say the car is less special because you used it to go to work, don't understand that.

I have a 04 X5 I refuse to get rid of and that's my get around car and it has a 190k on the odometer. The M3 will be a, I got to go somewhere, be right back and a stress relief when work and family bugs the shit out of me. I also have a newer X5 for winter duties also but in Virginia our winters seem to be milder then previous years.

For those that are using as a daily driver, do you have better cars than the G8x? Maybe if I can land the next promotion sooner than later I'd like to try and get a 992 turbo to park next to the G82…

I guess I can't really bring myself to daily a car at this cost. Too many asshole drivers that don't give a shit about you or you're vehicle. Get a civic for the commute then get home and swap keys for fun on an open road. If you really want more luxury get a regular 3 series for the commute to take that abuse.

I think there are so many dimensions that make the car a daily or not like: distance, frequency, expected traffic, location, income, and more.

I was debating daily driving my semi-old 911 (and did in summer). M3???? You drive it everyday, it is a new car. Of course daily it.

What is FRS? Some US market car? Whatever it is. If you paid 25 and get 20 back 9 years later you would be mad not to. Sell it.

Daily driver cant be bad car. Bad for morale!

Sounds like a really great plan.....hardly use the car to keep it super with nice low miles for the next owner, NOT

Cars are for driving, so drive it. Have a very hard time with someone spending $90K-$100K+ for a car & not using it.

When I bought this car I said I was gonna drive it rain or shine. Yes it's more to maintain and keep clean but it's an expensive car to me and letting it sit in the garage just makes me want to sell quicker when I do that sort of thing. I think of all the money I've spent for it to sit in the garage. Now I will be storing it for the winter months here in Michigan but I've driven many nice cars in the winters and it just beats the hell out of them no matter how much I try to stave off the damage from snow and salt. This car is a little more special to me so I found an old truck to drive which is nice cause a truck is also so handy. Best of both worlds. Were all in different positions and thoughts on these types of topics. And it's all good either way. You just have to be happy with your choice in the end. Your in a warm climate so I'd sell the older car and walk away with a nice full wallet and enjoy your other car. Enjoy!

Daily, which means the occasional commute to not-home-office at some point in the future. This car is engineered for dry, rain, snow. It'll see all three.

It's pretty nice, you can fit 4 people in it, normal trunk, fold down rear seats, it's not bone jarring on the road, but you can also take it to the canyons, the track, or be an ass on your commute rowing your own gears just the same as sports car. It also doesn't quite draw the same attention as a Corvette or similar for better or worst.

Do you need your sports car Sunday driver to also haul the family to a cabin or beach or something?
This is my thought. It's a great daily, and it's the whole point of the car.

If I needed a weekend only car, would have gotten a 718 GTS.

Also, if the last few years taught us anything, enjoy every second you have - life's to short to be concerned about trade in values or gas. (This is not meant to be undermine the value of a dollar or anything, but assuming a few extra gallons of premium per week and residuals are not a financial burden)

I had a daily; my old GTI.

Seemed when the M3 sat for week or two it was lethargic to get warmed up.

Gave gti to my brother.

Now M3 is daily

I use mine as a "daily" but I also have an x5 for when I need the cargo space. It seems like the x5 gets driven a few times a month, and the rest of the time I am in the m3

Whats an X3M for? Not appropriate for daily driving? I'm sure the gas milage is garbage too. There are more comfortable DD than the X3M. What about an X5M? Or closer to home the g81 m3 if you're lucky enough to live somewhere where you can get the wagon? What's the intended and appropriate use of g81 m3 vs a g80 m3?

That's my thought. I understand garaging a car if it's an ultra-rare collectible, but that's not the M3/M4. One of the main reasons I'm attracted to the M4 is because I can daily it and have a blast while doing so. The more you drive it, the more you're getting for your money in my opinion.

I'd say it depends on your parking situation at work. If you can routinely park the G80 in a spot where it won't pick up door dings or idiots backing up into your bumper then sell the FRS, otherwise keep it as your work car. As a recent victim of a rear bumper parking lot present I will remind you that people truly suck, and in my neck of the woods there is a 2 month waiting list at all the body shops. And then there's the whole diminished value issue.

Double post here but I have had a few M3's and I have noticed that treating it like "a Ferrari to me" kills some of the satisfaction of owning a car like this. The big benefit in my opinion of a G80 is the fact that it can kind of "do everything" reasonably well. You can take your kids to school, go on a road trip, take it to the race track... and it will be a solid all around car.

When you move into garage queen or dedicated track toy territory, for the money there are better cars. You could go Porsche for a very nice track day car with 2 seats, or even a low trim Ferrari California can be had in 100k range and you would actually have a Ferrari. Just my 2c, but part of the allure to me was the Swiss army knife factor. Its usable.

As someone coming from an STI, the MPG concerns are hilarious. The M3 gets better gas mileage with 476hp than the 300hp 2.5L EJ motor in the STI. My 2020 STI has a lifetime mpg of 15.7mpg and I do not have a lead foot by any means. Talk about engineering improvements!

I drive mine daily. If I wanted mileage, I would have bought a Prius. If I hated shifting, I would have bought an automatic. I ran 4 errands this morning, including parallel parking twice on steep hills. I put a total of about 7 miles on the car, and got in and out of the carbon seats 4 times.
