1200 mile service myth or fact

Just brought my M4 in for its 1200 mile service. The SA said the service includes oil change and differential oil change AND unlocking the software for more power. I know there has been multiple discussions on this “unlocking” as to whether it’s real or not, but it seems to be real (maybe).

Lie. Nothing gets unlocked to give you more power. That is a myth BMW Service Advisors have been spreading for years.

Is boost capped at 14.5 psi during break-in? I feel like when I watched the boost gauge during break-in, it never went past 14.5 or so.

If it is true, what difference will it make? There have been countless threads on this. I imagine you have read at least some of them, and I can only assume you did not believe the responses. So why create another thread asking the same question of the same pool of people?

So you're aware of multiple discussions on the subject and still felt compelled to create a new thread? Why?

The software change is to remove the reminder for the running in service and revert the maintenance schedule to the standard 1 year/12k miles. It does not add power.

100% myth and it has already been confirmed in the technical documents that full power is available the moment the vehicle rolls off the assembly line.

That’s not a software change, you can reset the service interval yourself from within the car from the hidden BC menu, or from an OBD interface tool like bimmerlink, or the dealer will do it from ISTA. If the car incidentally has a software update available at the time of the service they might go ahead and do it, but it’s not a part of the break-in service.

I heard part of the 1200 mile "unlock" is they give cupholders to CS owners. Any truth to that?

Just came home the 1200 mile service. No change noticed or documented on invoice. Not sure why the sales and service staff spread this myth.

Maybe it’s because it makes people come in for the service on time when they think it will unlock more power? Who knows.

I didn't say it was a software upgrade. But it's not a standard service interval reset that you can do from the BC. The actual dealer instructions are something like "remove running-in mode using ITSA". It removes the "Break-in service required in XXXX" notification. I don't know if this can be done with bimmerlink or not, but I suspect not.

Na, it’s just one of those things that should be a sticky “Offcial: 1200 mile service does not unlock any additional power”. It may already be but I don’t see sticky threads in the web app and that’s all I ever use.
