Botched PPF Install - What Now?
Hey guys, I recently had a full front PPF done on my G80 from a local, reputable shop. I did a high level inspection at the shop and things looked ok for the most part. However, after getting the car home, I noticed that when they trimmed the PPF around the parking sensor on the bumper, that they also cut into the paint itself. It looks like they trimmed to close and essentially removed bumper material along with the PPF, as the outer edges of the circle are black now instead of blue.
I've already contacted the shop, but what would you guys do in this situation? I think the only true fix at this point would be to remove the PPF, repaint the entire front bumper and then re-apply PPF, which seems crazy for a brand new car. |

What did the shop say to you? I wouldn't settle for anything less than them fixing the paint and reinstalling the PPF correctly, personally.

My two cents is you definitely need to bring it to their attention.
I would go in person. Keep it professional, although I can appreciate why you’d be upset. Retell your story and show them the damage. I think what you’re describing is going to be hard for them to refute. Mistakes happen, but I don’t think they should come at your expense. The product you brought in is in worse condition than when it left, which I think will speak for itself. Keep us updated. I’m invested because I’ll be getting my G80 in the next few months, with PPF scheduled for installation shortly after. I wish you the best but I think it’ll work out, especially if the installer has a positive reputation. I think this is a great example of why you go with someone like them for this installations vs. someone who has no reviews or no reputation. |

I get the grille is likely too difficult to cover completely (which I totally understand) but I would like some protection somewhere on it especially since it’s going to be my daily. |

I skipped the grill for the ppf. As a result, they spent the resources on ppf'ing some other part of the car--I only did front end. I figured I may replace the grill anyways if something happened to it's look.
Because it's my daily I didn't go for the full ppf (i.e., concours level); just the level of protecting it from road chips. |

the grille is a $200 piece of ABS plastic, you could probably order 2 of them and keep them as spares for what it costs to PPF it.

this is why i dont do ppf. no shop around me is as good as some of these ones you see on youtube (topaz detailing) with a dust free shop room, printed precut pieces, no blades near your car, wrapped edges.
had it done on my 458. they didnt damage the paint but there dust between the film and paint which very noticeable on dark colors. edges started peeling after 1-2 years. they used multiple pieces on the front bumper and i could see the lines were they tried to join them.

Thank you!!! Yea I would rather they did not cut around each parking sensor.
I asked shop I plan to use specifically about the grill and the response was what most said above. It’s not worth doing. Because price are very small and thin. It’s easier to just replace that grill if you. |

Just to get back on topic, I just spoke to the shop and they were of course very apologetic. The owner said he took the pictures to his touchup guy and he is 99% sure he can get in there and completely fix the issue without having to remove any parts, etc. He said if the fix is still not satisfactory then he will pay to have the bumper resprayed and re-PPF'd.
Should I give their touchup guy a shot? |

Sucks. But not the first time this has happened and the shop, while still trying to satisfy you, will seek to correct it at their lowest cost.
I would rather have a good, small touch up rather than a larger or full respray, so I would have a $$ in mind for compensation (credit back to you or future service credit depending on how you feel about the shop) and negotiate that before they started any type of repair. |

I was always concerned about this when I first looked into PPF. The shop I found does not hand cut anything, it's all cut on a plotter and is Expel. There may be occasional adjustments where a blade is used, but to date I've never had a problem on 5+ cars. Even when hand cut, a well trained installer should never cause damage.

Most PPF shops offer pre cut films. Well, the good ones definitely will.
In any case, if done correctly, PPF should last for years. 5 years and still going strong on my M4 CS. When washed car looks likes it did on delivery day. Suntek on mine. |

With PPF, it’s about the installer. But mistakes still happen.
I don’t want pre cut patterns. Reminds me of my F80 which I replaced the side reflectors with ones from IND. Picked up the car from ppf and there was the patterned cut out for the reflectors… |

If it is not too noticeable and you are someone who gets a new car every few years then maybe ask for some $ compensation for the damage and leave it as it is or touch up w/blue paint because re-spray comes with its own issues such as color matching.

I suggest you get them to give to money to take care of it later or offset the reduced value of the vehicle. |
