So here’s the deal-

When they came out with iDrive 8.5 for all the non-M cars (Spring 2023) they introduced the new Home screen with the map in the background, the “Quick select” boxes on the left-hand side, and relocated the shortcuts to the bottom of the screen.

However, that was only for the non-M cars.

M cars (XM, X5M, X6M, M3, M4) soldiered on with iDrive 8.0 and the “M-specific” look of the horizontally arranged widgets (including the one that shows tire pressures/temps using a depiction of the old M1 from the 70s). This included the permanent “CLIMATE MENU” on the bottom.

With the introduction of iDrive 8.5 to the M cars for the 2025 model year, the look appears to resemble iDrive 8.0 like before (still horizontally arranged widgets and CLIMATE MENU at the bottom) but when you press “CLIMATE MENU” you get the new easier to use iDrive 8.5 climate controls.

So that’s it in a nutshell. Old skin for the M car version of iDrive 8.5 but new climate controls.

Like the steering wheel refresh - the thinner lower portion looks more sporty.

Love the new bright silver wheels. Hoping the mass production of the taillights will cheapen them as an upgrade item.

The LCI does have laser lights, BMW just moved the lasers to the taillights.

That's not a thing anymore in iD8+ unfortunately.

I did mention this before, it seems the LCI will be getting a weird hybrid version of iD8 and 8.5

Quote:
The interior shots of everything seem to be running a strange mix of iD8 and 8.5

It has the "CLIMATE MENU" shortcut (and none of the other shortcuts) from iD8, but it has the temp-menu seat heating and cooling from 8.5.

Seems quite strange tbh. No idea why they'd do this.

Could you just make an M3 Competition xDrive with a 6 speed manual please…? That’s the only refresh I want.

That would be amazing, but would require a nearly completely new manual...unless they could salvage some variant of the F chassis xDrive manual and beef it up. Doubt they'd do all that.

Too much work to mess up at the VDC/VPC; it will be a factory installed option as all of the electronics have to removed and reinstalled on the new wheel.

I belive that iDrive 8.5 lost the pre-arranged temperature setting to active heated steering wheel and now uses a BMW algorithm when it should activate. BMW has made iDrive so complicated going from 8.0 to 8.5 with the M skins. Was so much cleaner with iDrive 7.

I was shocked when the XM didn’t get this new steering wheel and used the parts bin recycled from the F95/F95. The recent upcoming all-new X3 interior prototype pics had the new wheel (the 12 o’clock position had black tape) so hopefully BMW will switch all of the M lite and full M steering wheels for the SC manufactured cars over to the new wheel—as I don’t see them manufacturing 2 different M steering wheels especially when BMW is streamlining common parts for economies of scale pricing.

I did some digging on the German configurator:
1- Alcantara wheel is a factory option
2- Laser tails only come with the Adaptive LED headlights, which is an option from "base" 6MT to Comp xDrive
3- Pre-LCI interior trim won't fit LCI (vents' shape changed)
4- The silver 825Ms are hot

Obviously the laser being an option might change when the 2025 US order guides are available, but, given how currently they offer it as a paid extra, I wouldn't count on it being standard here either.

Ooooh interesting, you can option both heated steering wheel and the alcantara wheel at the same time! Would love a heated version to swap into my G81 (factory heated).

I studied the pictures of the steering wheel, and I couldn’t find the button to activate the heating feature. That makes me wonder where it is. Does the steering wheel heat get activated through iDrive now this could make a re-fitting the new steering wheel a challenge for people that want to preserve steering wheel heat function, if that’s the case.

Doesn’t your G81 steering wheel have the actual heated switch? You would have to program iDrive 8 then to activate the heat as the MY25 steering wheel doesn’t have the switch. The new LCI headunits that BMW is now installing needs BMW server side secure code authentication when new parts are install, as I know this is true for the MGU5, but does the G81 has the MGU4 head unit?

Yes, heated steering wheel is is activated via iDrive 8.5. See my above post reguarding secure coding with the new LCI MGU5 headunit.

We're making this possible at the moment. It's based off the i5 wheel.

Will have more info shortly.
