Good question and it wasn't something that was easily noticed under the front nose covers.BOT was keeping it a secret, hardly surprising then they cruised to all those championships.

The video was HAM's onboard video using DAS in the "2018" Hungarian GP . Think Bottas ran with DAS as well (not sure yet)
If it is true what the video shows . I really wonder why the Merc's WDC rankings aren't deleted in 2018 and 2019 by the FIA

Anyway , the whole situation is really interesting !

Perhaps some Merc fanboys can chime in ....

DAS was in 2020 approved by the FIA . But NOT in 2018 and 2019 !!!
"NO ONE" heard the word DAS in 2018 and 2019 ...While it was used by Mercedes !

DAS didn't break any regulations in any year because the device was not ever excluded by the regulations...except now for 2021
You don't have to get pre-approval for any innovation that is not excluded by the regulations.
If I put some words in upper case would that help you understand what ought to be a simple concept?

Sigh...Well there is this process called SCRUTINEERING. Google will tell you all about it.

If an innovation is discovered (during scrutineering or at any other time) that is contrary to the regulations then it will be explicitly banned immediately and penalties may well apply.
If an INNOVATION is NOT EXCLUDED by the REGULATIONS then its ALLOWED.

Caps in case it does actually help you understand!

Yeah I read that,HAM is in a dream world with his demands.It shows how Merc's parent company had to step in and wake them up to reality who already drew up the contract for him to sign!
