Lugging engine
Hey all, new to m3's so pls excuse my ignorance.
So I decided to have some fun after my break-in service and put it into M2 mode on the highway and floored it but the car was sluggish to say the least. I looked down and saw that the trans was in S3 mode... which is strange b/c I set it up as D3. The service must've reset it to defaults. Did I damage anything by lugging in the engine in such a high gear? Is the car smart enough to limit torque when a gear is clearly "overloaded" in S3 mode or am I hoping for too much? |

What gear/rpm were you in? Boost kicks in around 3000 rpm so if you were at 2000 then the car wont really go anywhere.

Yes, you’ll be fine. In S3 if you make a mistake you bounce at the limiter for a sec before the car shifts for you. Hopefully it was only for a sec or two. I messed up a dig and launch control didn’t engage, and I bounced on first and second (then realized the error).

And floored it for like 3 seconds, I did this like three times… Does the car limit power if the gear is too high? |

The car has an incredibly complex ecu calibration which has load/torque maps for every possible situation. Nothing is going to happen because you accelerated from a low rpm in a high gear a few times.

Yes, the DME protects you. That’s no problemo…

Lol, it’s not about limiting power. It’s about the engine not being able to produce enough power to get going at such a low RPM and high gear. The concept is simple… it’s like a 10 speed bike… ever try to start pedaling from a really high gear? Yeah… it’s going to be hard, same with anything that works on the same concept. The engine probably didn’t even make any boost at that level. Not sure what you expected it to do… did you expect a downshift to happen for you and it didn’t due to the mode you were in?

Even then it’s not going to do anything but just not go due to lack or torque in the powerband. You floor it and nothing in a manual. It’s not going to blow up.
