Its absolutely worth it, especially if you drive hard/road trip/highway/track whatever may be....

All of my cars have full top to bottom PPF for peace of mind.... But i do alot of road trips, canyon runs, etc

The maintenance is also so damn easy which is another benefit of it , wash it off , rinse it whatever and not have to maintain it to the highest degree

PS its especially worth it and mandatory on a matte paint car as well

I have matte green amg gtr and matte blue huracan evo ... you get some chips or scratches on matte paint and you cannot touch it up, full panel repaint ... learned the hard way on a matte mercedes!

Yes you're crazy. But need more info. Do you have kids with bikes in your garage? Are you OCD? Do you live in a climate with winter? Do they gravel your roads? What's your budget?

You need to take a leap of faith. I didn't want to leave my M2C sit like that and i got my first rock chip on my hood before the odometer passed 200 kms.

I plan to put 5k miles a year on mine with fair weather only driving. Will have it ceramic coated for ease of washing but no PPF. It’s too expensive and even the best PPF I’ve seen still seems to show edges when looking over it closely. I’ve gotten good at using tiny micro toothpick style sponge brushes to touch up paint chips on prior cars. That will be my approach for the G80. With my mileage, I expect 1-3 tiny paint chips per year that I can touch up to be near invisible. Would rather do that for 5-7yrs of ownership than spend $4-5K+ on PPF

I haven’t kept cars long enough for PPF or ceramic coating to make financial sense.

It’s your choice to make, but I had mine done and you can not even tell it’s on there.

I’ve never had fear about leaving my cars for work. Take it to a good shop and you should be fine. Does shit happen? Of course. If the place is decent they should resolve and issue that may occur. I chuckle when people act like it’s life or death with a vehicle. I just let my 19 year old nephew take my 458 to a wedding. He thinks he is the man now. Little punk:-) He has used my F-82 a bunch of times. Just drive and enjoy your toys. Don’t worry so much 😁🤣

It’s nice to know that the car will be nice and protected for that second owner. They will definitely appreciate it.

Maybe if done by the absolute best installer and absolute best film... I've never seen a PPFed car that I couldn't immediately point out an exposed edge. Around the grill, mirrors, cameras, if not something super obvious that should be invisible... And that's a fresh job, give it a few years and even easier to spot anything like that. For this reason, and several others, I have zero interest in PPF. So OP is not alone.

Like some other things in life, unprotected is the best.

I didn’t do mine because it’s a lease. If you own a car longer than 5 years then it’s probably a good idea.

They now have PPF that repairs itself if scratched. Amazing how that works.

To Op,

I think you are referencing film from 10 + years ago. Go to a great shop today and the job is seamless, you won't be able to see anything on the vehicle, just beautiful paint that is a dream to wash.

I went to a shop while they were applying PPF on a dark blue Bentley convertible at the time. The owner allowed me to feel the car with and without the PPF on. I was told that they charge a little over $9000 for that Bentley. They gave me a quote of just $5500 for the BMW. (which was within a few hundred dollars of what I was quoted at two other local shops)

It did feel nice, but that was why I started wondering if I really wanted PPF...

Just did that last night with a hair dryer on a scuff on my roof rail. Took like 10 seconds and is pure sorcery. Film also has infused ceramic in it. My car washes are pure therapy. If you have the budget how could you not want to fully wrap this work of art?

Because the factory paint process isn't very good. So I will not be obsessed with it. If I get the car brought down to metals and something like a 10 stage pearl paint maybe then.

Based on your replies, it seems as though it’s about the expense.

No need to do the whole car. Key areas should cost <$2500.

As others have stated, it’s first about road conditions and how much wear and tear occurs via normal use.

For an 80-100k car, it’s an easy decision.

I have a 992 Carrera T on the way. Not going to do anything to the paint. My 2020 X3MC with 40k miles got the same treatment and still looks phenomenal. Wash it with two buckets regularly and don’t tailgate people and you’ll be fine without PPF.

I was thinking the same thing.. the original post says it’s not due to the cost, but I assume that has to be everyone’s #1 deterrent of getting PPF. If it were free, everyone would get it

My wife’s BSM X5 M50 has 70% PPF + ceramic on the whole car. After 3 years of it being our road trip warrior, the front of the car looks brand new.

My AW G83 is at the 8 month mark..Zero PPF/Ceramic, and the front looks nowhere near brand new. It’s been a placeholder for my SSG G80 6MT that is finally coming in, which will most definitely be getting PPF/Ceramic. Similar package that I got for the X5 for about $3500. No brainer for me as well. If you don’t care too much about rock chips, or if you won’t keep the car for long, then save the cash!

Lots of great comments and insights on this thread…and they’re from both sides of opinions. Now I’m thinking to go for it.

Find a decent shop. My shop does vehicles that are literally orders of magnitude more valuable than my M4 and the shop lead didn’t fuck around. When I was there she watched the guys pull the cars in and out and made sure everything was perfect.

I love having a perfect looking car. It’s an obsession and a hobby. PPF (especially stealth PPF like I have) is ridiculously easy to care for. I can make my car look showroom fresh in about 20 minutes. I have matte specific detailing spray which makes it wipe and go. That in itself is worth it to me. I also live in a region with an insane amount of rocks in the road. My front end would be a mess within a year without it.

I always enjoy these posts. I say buy once, cry once, and it’s over. Don’t listen to the people that tell you their car has 40k miles on it, and it looks flawless. Unless you are blind to swirl marks, I’ve never, in my life, seen a car that has 40k miles on it that has no swirl marks. If you’re blind to paint blemishes, forget PPF. If you pay close attention to detail, and that sort of thing bothers you, it’s worth it’s weight in gold.

This is my car with full body PPF and ceramic, and this isn’t with the car cleaned, this is after driving it 120 miles home, in the pouring rain. Second video is what happens when you scratch PPF. And finally the M2, was backed into and the PPF was removed.

If you are really worried, put a dash cam that records for 24 hours off the battery. I can’t think of anything else.

I’m not that worried.
Any reputable shop… this is their livelihood.

My installer did a less than stellar job on my Porsche and it was $8500. Owner is taking it back to try to fix, but the guy who did it just died unexpectedly. Puts things in perspective really.

At the end of the day, these are people too and we’re just talking about plastic wrap on a car. It cuts both ways.

If you don’t trust em, don’t leave it.
I think that’s your answer.

Considering the new shop were I am going next has Ferrari, lambos and 911 gt3 in their yard… I pretty feel safe.
