Opinion of SPY G82 M4 from older generation M owner
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The G8x M3/4 was the first M car that I didn't understand at all when I saw the unveil pictures, especially the front. It just didn't feel like a very coherent design. Seeing the car in picture somewhat changed my mind: - The car looks infinitely better in real life, I've yet to see pictures that really captures the car. It has to be one of the least photogenic car I can think of - I wouldn't call it beautiful/elegant like an E46 M3 or E39 M5, but it does have presence - My main concern with the car was never the grille, but the lower bumper portion. The car had the CF package. For some reason, I don't see what I disliked about the front bumper in real life, which is very odd - Car had blue interior with carbon buckets. Blue leather looks so much better in person, wasn't a fan of the yellow Alcantara though. With the rough texture, it doesn't look right to me. It would be better with blue leather and just regular Alcantara - Assuming Carbon buckets are decently comfy, they look like a must have option for me. Just stunning. - First time seeing Sao Paulo Yellow on a "smaller" car and absolutely love it. I think this color is going to look seriously on an even more compact M2. CF parts really pop on it. In summary, I'm still anxiously waiting for the G87 with maybe more "normal" looks, but if a 4 door was a prerequisite for me, I'd consider the G80 after seeing the front end in person. Completely understand that it's not for everyone, but if it can change my opinion a little bit, then it's probably worth for you to see it in person.

So true about it being one of the most unphotogenic cars in history. I too believe seeing it in person brings out lines/design cues/depth that is hard to capture in photos. I also like that your photos were taken at sunrise/sunset (can't tell) because the way the light hits accentuates these design elements and lets the car shine. Looks fantastic in your photos

I really lost hope for this car but still thought I should see it in person. It definitely changed my mind. If they would have brought the G81 to the US, it would jump to the top of my Christmas list, followed by the G87.

There is also a history here where a truly terrible photo leaked first that for sure didn’t help set the tone. That said the extent of judgment before the car has been seen IRL has been unprecedented and the same is now happening to the driving dynamics. In the end my guess is still that all will be fine and it will be seen as a worthy M car in all aspects.

The damn car didn't get it's fair shot from the beginning but as I've been saying all along for almost 2 years this platform will be great inside out. If I don't pic up a 911 turbo S I will pick up a G80 M3 for sure I just don't know if I'm going to grab the first batch or wait for the 2022 model.

I get that some cars, some things really, look better in person, sometimes even way better...... but I've never seen anything or anyone that I thought was horrid in photos that I then liked even a little in person. Maybe a shade or a color of something, a specific aspect like the trim or texture you can't see in pictures or capture or find the right light. But not the overall design and appearance. High def photos of today are pretty true to life.
I also think the new M variants look way better than the non-M's (the m grill is better). But still just don't like any of them. I don't know why BMW needed to emulate Lexus and Infiniti, now or ever. |

I don’t know yet if we are getting the G82. It will be my wife’s daily and we are now both leaning M5 for her. It’s the last chance for a V8 M car and it seems like a pretty good M5 overall. Just need to drive it first. Last edited by solstice; 12-22-2020 at 04:32 PM.. |

I don't understand the people who think the leaked photos look much different than the actual photos of the released car. In my eyes, the leaked photos look exactly like the released car... because they were actual photos of the final production car. The leaked photos of the red one showing the front grille and rear diffuser looks exactly like the toronto red car posted and there was that white front end which had an odd angle and perspective to it. When someone in that thread corrected the perspective, it looks exactly like the released G80 pictures.
Maybe it's because I've never had any issue w/ the large grilles so I was never one who kept hoping that the car would look different than the leaked photos. |

What about this post makes it news worthy? Hell make a post from someone not liking the car and make it news worthy as well.
The entire G8x forum is so contrived. |

Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.
The CF bucket seats look like a must have option. Very interested in early feedback about these seats: comfort, adjustability. |
