Frozen Dark Grey substitute -> Mineral Grey/Dark Graphite with matte PPF

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi all,

Like many of you, I was very surprised to learn of BMW’s decision to stop producing the M3 in FDG. I was lucky enough to get a build at the end of the run in May ’22 and I could not be happier with the color.

The apparent heir to FDG in the G8x color lineup is Frozen Pure Grey, a very nice color no doubt, but not as special as FDG. Which brings me to the topic of this thread:

Have prospective G8x buyers considered “replicating” FDG by ordering Mineral Grey Metallic and doing a full wrap with matte PPF? There are a few threads out there of folks who have done this with previous generation BMWs and the results look amazing and quite close to FDG. See examples here:

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=21335661
https://wichitaclearbra.com/blog//bm...atin-clear-bra

There is also a nice example of this with Dark Graphite Metallic:
https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...php?p=28675855

From a cost perspective, these options would be no different than ordering a G80 in FDG considering that most people do a full PPF wrap of their frozen cars to protect the paint and facilitate maintenance.

- Has anyone tried this with their G80/G82?
- Are you happy with the results?
- Do you know any other color than Mineral Grey and Dark Graphite that work well with matte PPF to replicate FDG?

I'm one of the unlucky ones who ordered FDG on the M3 but missed the 2022 build so now on 2023 and I have ordered GTP. I can give it the mat look by doing the XPEL Stealth wrap, but will ask the wrap place to do a side-by-side for me to compare and see if it's worth it. The GTP is really dynamic and I may lose that with a stealth wrap. I did see pics of someone with a DG in stealth wrap and it's pretty impressive. Looks similar to FDG, but nothing is as nice as the original, IMO.

Dravit Grey Metallic looks pretty good with matte PPF (Xpel Stealth). There is a guy who owns a dravit grey with matte ppf on instagram too but I'll have to look for it.

Edit: I guess some of the pics below were from the guy on instagram but I included a link to more pics. Looks like he changed it to a yellow wrap now.

Great, thanks for sharing these pictures!

I am surprised at how good DG looks with Xpel Stealth. DG has a bit of "uni paint" character to it compared to other metallic colors (looks half uni/half metallic to me), and sometimes giving the matte treatment to uni colors does not work. That being said, DG looks very good in matte. Great choice!

See pictures below for GTP in matte. This is a Lambo Urus in Grigio telesto with XPEL Stealth full ppf. I assume Lambo and BMW Grigio Telesto are very similar -if not identical- so this might give you an idea of the general look your GTP M3 would have in matte ppf.

Wow! That doesn't look nice AT ALL. I won't need to do a comparison in person. Will definitely NOT do a stealth wrap on the GTP. Thanks for sharing.
