I've daily driven MR2 Turbo, Mustang GT, M2 in Canadian winters. That said, given the choice, I would take an AWD M3/M4 as there are days/weeks where RWD even with winter tires isn't ideal, and you have to pick your spots.
If I lived in an area where the winters were milder with only occasional snow, I would probably opt for RWD. So, because the best answer varies depending on where you live, I'm conflicted on how to answer the poll. |

RWD with winter tires is doable. But AWD with winter tires provides a much higher level of control. My guess is that RWD with winter tires is better than AWD with all seasons, but I haven't actually tried the latter.

Definitely depends on location and if the owner can afford to own another car more practical for winter. AWD's def the better choice if the car will be a daily!

I have now tested the M3 xdrive with Michelin Alpin 5s on slippery snow covered Minnesota roads. It can for sure be an all year every day car. Not great clearance but great traction. I did put it in rear wheel only and that did not work except for 30 seconds of Cheerios. I was worried the width of the tires would make it skate but the Michelins are crazy good. So if in doubt xdrive with winter wheels.
