M3/M4 vs M2 Pricing

Haven’t seen a post that rationalizes the price difference between the m3/m4 and m2. Based upon how I would spec an apples/apples car, I came to
-$66,795 for an auto m2
-$85,875 for a m4 comp

Without getting into the weeds of the options, how do you rationalize the extra 19k difference between these when the engine is the same, the other functional components are the same, and the interior is basically the same. Only things I can think of
-3-5k in length (9inches or 5% length)
-2.6k roof
-$500 parking cameras
-1k leather (Marino)
-1.5k bootmod m2 and get to 504 hp. Not even sure this is a fair difference since this is not an extra cost to bmw.
-built in Germany
-Increased margins on the flagship

Wondering if anyone knows of any other differences that would create such a gap. I want to buy a m3/m4, but the rationale side of my brain is asking why with such a discrepancy. I don’t understand why BMW would build such a similar car that is so much cheaper. They do have control of the supply end though.

Can’t get full leather if you want. Cant get cooled seats. There are some other things you can’t get on an M2.

Can’t get xDrive.

If you are going base and a low option build, yes, the M2 is a compelling argument. If you are going on a more lux spec, the M3/M4 starts nicer and gets even more so with options. Also….always unfair to compare modded to stock. Not everyone wants to void their warranty.

It’s good to have choices. We should not complain.

Not complaining, I on a fact finding mission. Understand that the m3/m4 provides a platform and an opportunity (or a threat) to spend additional money and get more options, but that wasn’t the point of the thread. The key point was why is there such a large gap in price between equally and popular optioned cars for people who don’t want the other significant options like xdrive . Just trying to figure out what I am getting for the extra money e.g. maybe the wheels are higher quality on the m3

Interior materials on the M2 are not as nice as the M3/4. Carpet pile is cheap feeling on the M2 and I don't even think you get a stitched sensatec dash as standard on the M2. Vernasca vs merino leather as mentioned. Door card injected moulding isn't as squishy and the texture isn't as nice. No ventilation option for the seats as mentioned. No rear zone climate control on the M2. Probably less sound insulation as well (M2 road noise is more noticeable).

My back seats get used by adults on regular basis and we fill the trunk with Costco loot consistently. My M3 works as an only car and my M2C did not, and it doesn't look to me that the new M2 added enough usability to bridge that gap.

It does not. My buddy had his over this weekend and we compared. He has one child and a short wife. I have two children, one who is a giant, and a tall wife. M3 for us for sure!

The M2 is a nice car. With the dash and seats being the same, it really does approach the M3/4 in feel when you get in.

Oh, yes, someone said the wheels. Ours are forged, M2 are cast

As others have said or alluded to, the M2 is more of your entry level M car. That being said the performance is an amazing deal when you compare it to the M3/4 If you spec it similar i.e. RWD 6MT. Now if you get Xdrive Comp then it's a different story. Off the line it'll be no contest. Other things to consider is space. You have a family or want a more luxurious interior? M3/M4. You want a BMW and more traditional sports car? M2. Options my friend you always want options as a consumer.

For us, it was about interior space. We wouldn’t want to do a 13-hour road trip in an M2.

How about a more apples to apples comparison: non-comp M4 vs. manual M2.

The price difference is about $15K ($63,200 vs. $78,100). For that money, you get a bunch of stuff that is either optional or not available on the M2: carbon fibre roof, forged wheels, HK sound system, better leather, more interior space and nicer interior materials.

G8x has nicer interior materials.
more weight savings in the chassis despite being larger (the m2 is heavier than the m4 base)
more options available (interior colors, full leather, individual colors available

I think also compare depreciation. I had an M2 on order but because i had added M Performance parts to it and almost checked every box, price came out to 82k MSRP.

My m4 Comp xDrive i got for 11% under MSRP which put it at around 83k. So for me the price difference was negligible except now i have an individual color, xdrive, 503 hp, merino leather, and usable back seats, which i've used a lot more recently than expected.

Now of course this is with a ton of options added to the M2 so i do admit it's not the most fair of comparisons. The M2 would have come with bucket seats, M Performance Steering wheel and Performance HAS kit, and there is still a part of me that kinda wishes i just waited for the M2. I actually like the body styling way more and i like the size of it a lot more than the M4.

But i think overall the M4 was the better package.
