G80cx v Tesla Model S

Given the price drop on the S, anyone cross shopping? Tesla offered me $86-$89k trade value for mine ('23, 8k miles)... and it's tempting given the price drop to $95k. But I just can't part with the M3. The S is a much larger car with (documented) poorer build quality, worse brakes, albeit similar acceleration numbers. Just curious on anyone's thoughts on this comparo. I had a model 3 performance which was alright and now a model y which seems like the sweet spot for tesla, but I see the model S all over the place now and can't help but wonder how people actually like theirs or if they've had both the G80 and the model S. My conclusion is the impression most people have is model S is great for commuting and the M3 is great as a weekend car, but actually the M3 is amazing at both - only catch is I get 20 mpg commuting and 15 mpg on the weekends.

I’m sure you get lots of comments regarding the differences but something rarely talked about is the huge depreciation as soon as you leave the lot. I’m guessing it has something to do with Tesla constantly messing with the MSRP. My brother is a Tesla nut but slowly coming around because he is losing so much on resale. He recently got a S Plaid and 6 months later they are offering him $45k less than he paid.

The G80 M3XC is a great all around car. It serves as a weekend, daily, commuting, and track weapon. It has all the awesome new technology while still throwing you back into your seat and putting a smile on your face.

EVs are cool until you run out of charge and have to wait hours to "fill up." That 4-5 hour road trip that would be amazing in an m3 now turned into a 7+ hour one in the Tesla. I will gladly pay more in gas than have to deal with terrible build quality, not being able to fix my car anywhere I want, and paying an arm and a leg for Tesla only parts (i.e. - news story about a woman needing a new windshield on her Model Y that cost $1,600+).

I’m not sure if I would trade a G8x for an S Long Range. I haven’t driven one but there’s nothing special about the car that makes me feel like it’s worth nearly $100k. A lightly used Plaid seems like a much better value, as you’d essentially have the quickest production car.

I love Tesla and had a MYP as a stopgap while I waited for my G82, but I don’t think the convenience of Tesla outweighs everything the G8x has to offer in terms of build quality, materials, and driving experience.

S is ok, but outside of the acceleration it’s not much to write home about imo.

Now, a roadster would be a different story.
I think I might have to think about that.

But vs a g80?
Nah.

I’d take the m3 every day and twice on Sunday. It’s a much better car all around, no downsides of ev ownership, better looking, close to as fast as an S if you are m3cx and probably faster than an S past 60-80mph.

I just don’t see the S as real competition in terms of looks or what the m3 can do. There are some guys around here that are real track rats though and they could probably give you some first hand experience with both on a track, if that’s your thing.

On the street, the m3 has more presence imo.

Quickest for the short now.
718 ev is out in 25’ and Lamborghini hybrid is on the way as well.

The plaid’s days are numbered and then you’ll have a regular old Tesla. It’ll still be fast, but the acceleration is it’s only claim to fame.

The S is ok, but I don’t even think it is even the best looking car really. I’d expect the value of them all to drop precipitously once the majors catch up to the plaid, and they will very soon.

And now the price is 85K for the long range S. Tesla depreciation is in free fall.

My 2 cents. Even the long range S is insanely fast in a straight line. It literally made me nauseous when I test drove one. I wouldn’t even consider a Plaid. Instant acceleration is a big factor and just about anything else feels slow by comparison. But that is where the fun stops. It’s very heavy and it has no feeling or feedback when you drive it. It’s kinda boring outside of instant acceleration. The G8x driving dynamics are so much better, I don’t know how you could even compare the two.

The model S is a design that is over a decade old. Nobody should be buying one of those today.

I could never have just a tesla as a primary car, but having both is pretty awesome. The tesla makes driving simple and comfortable. Also the stereo system is way better then the m3.

For me the Y is 1600 miles a month of driving the kids around to school and extra curriculars. And when it rains. And when we go downtown for any reason or out to eat. Then I took the M (now a Z4M40, traded it) on weekends, weeks off work, and mountain drives or anytime I needed an adrenaline boost or relaxing drive.

Usually if I’m driving with my kids or wife in the car, we take the tesla. Every other occasion I’m taking the m3.

I decided to keep my Y since the recent price cuts made it impossible to sell lol. I agree, it’s a really good 2 car combo. Love the carefree aspect of owning an EV and it’s surprisingly fun to zip around.

I always knew one day I’d get an ev. Had to adopt the ways once the price cuts came. It’s really a no brainer. When your average mid size car or crossover is around $40k these days and my model y was only around $46k, it just makes no sense to not do it. Low maintenance and savings from gas alone make up for it. The tesla doesn’t feel special like the m3 does when you get into it, but it does everything it’s intended to do and does it great. I was among the lucky people that got one during the price cut and didn’t have one issue with the build quality at all.

My S completely tanked in price. It makes it kind of dumb to sell at this point. But I really want a car that’s more fun, which is why I want the M3. But it’s sooooo much more expensive than the Tesla. I would keep both but the Tesla would have to stay out in the driveway which makes it more difficult to charge. I don’t know if that’s a good idea. It would be nice to have both though and also keep miles and wear and tear low on the BMW.

I don't have kids nor will i ever (i'm fixed) but driving EV's, or tesla since i only driven a mach-e besides teslas, makes driving amazing.

You're essentially a cheat code when you're driving. Effortless passing, accelerating from a light/stop sign when you need to merge in a hurry. Beating people that won't let you pass or merge etc.

It's the best!

My G82 is 20 months old, 14,500 miles, and I’m probably going to start taking everything off my car to get rid of it. It’s just that time, I feel. I like it, don’t know if I love it. I talked to chicagofan00 the other day, offline, and I was saying it’s like a supermodel for me. Gotta watch where I drive it. Cant park without using the front camera. Always worried about who I park next to. Don’t park it outside.

It’s full ppf, but even I’m picky about keeping the ppf in good shape. It’s just turned into too much of a garage Queen that I have to be too cautious about everything. I don’t want to drive it in the rain. I know it sounds ridiculous, because it’s just a car, but, having about $150k into it, I take extreme care of it.

Cross shopping:

I went out, last weekend, and drove a Model S LR and as someone else already mentioned in here, it made me physically sick. I had a headache after just driving the car for 5-10 minutes.

I wouldn’t exactly put it in the same performance league as the G80. The 60-130 in the 670hp LR is 7.7. The G80 is 9.8.

Why bother with the Plaid? Because you always get used to the power. The Plaid 60-130 is 4.3, and nothing really touches it as far as speed and quickness.

I realize the depreciation, but, taking into consideration that my fuel bill for 2 cars, last month, was $744.08, which is more than the entire cost of my commuters payment, and insurance. I could get rid of my G80 and my commuter and just get the Plaid. Since depreciation is trash, anyway, I could put the 28k miles a year on it, like my commuter, and save about $1,300 a month in payments, fuel and insurance.

I ended up buying a Y and trading the M (after 9k miles) for a Z4. I do about 1k miles each month on both.
The M was a magnet for attention, and the chassis was very taut. Power delivery wasn’t the smoothest either. I worry less now and enjoy driving a lighter sports car with a compliant ride quality with a smoother engine. Plus mpg is up from 15 to 21. And the Y for commute really blends in.
If I had fo pick one car, the plaid is incredible performance with efficiency and comfort. Very sharp interior as well.
