Delay getting my deposit back after ordering from a different dealer

I'm at 3 weeks at this point. It's not a huge deal but I've followed up with my dealer a couple of times and they said initially it should only take a couple of days... I def don't think anything shady is going on but I wonder if BMW corporate is having issues on their end processing these?

I wouldn't think BMW corporate is involved. The dealer has your money.

That's what I was thinking also...

I'm not worried at all because I have e-mails + the charge is on my AMEX. This is more of a general question as I know other folks may need a refund also for various reasons so curious of time expectations.

You should be able to walk in & walk out with your check. Hit the credit card company with a claim as the dealer is just jerking you around.

FWIW Have never given a deposit on any BMW I ordered going back to 2004.

Thanks for feedback. It's a $2,500 deposit. I'm going to send another f/u e-mail today.

Just my two cents, but I think dealers asking for $2,500 is outrageous. I'm personally against that holding any of my money, especially on a car that will be so easy to sell, but I understand. They are ordering a car to my specs so they want some assurance that I'm not going to bolt. Just seems excessive.

Unless it's a weird color combo that would be really hard to sell out of the dealer's inventory...

Completely agree. BMW of Las Vegas is asking for $5000 deposit. Apparently this is also NON-refundable. They also jack up the money factor, even though they say that would sell at MSRP. I literally just walked out after finding out about the deposit. I found a better deal in LA with no deposit. These dealerships think they can do whatever they want because of the lack of competition.

Well I never actually got an allocation. The car was never ordered. I cancelled my order a week after I placed it as I found an M4 in NM...

Anyways, I spoke with my sales rep again he said said the dealer submitted the request to corporate and he was following-up

If you don't get traction from the dealer, file a dispute with amex for the charge. This way your charge gets suspended and then amex will go after them. You'll probably just have to show proof, etc that the deposit was refundable and you did cancel.. so all those emails and what not should be fine. Then once amex is done doing their investigation, you should get the credit back.

Yep - I will for sure. I'm not trying to be an asshole towards Camelback and the sales rep but it's weird it's been weeks and nothing has happened. Not accusing them of anything but just kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I had my break-in done there last week also and the service team was great.

Maybe they do things differently and have to go thru corporate?

This is the first I have heard of a deposit being non-refundable.

You are right my good sir

No such thing as non refundable, you don’t own the car. You don’t even have a car the is built yet. Dealer Can’t keep a deposit for a car that don’t exist. You car could be super customized..... they can’t keep your deposit. Just like you have no recourse if they take the car you ordered and sold it to someone else for a high price. Until that car is registered with the DMV as yours... all deposits are refundable. ALWAYS USE A CREDIT CARD.....I recommend AMEX, they will gladly refund your charge and the dealer has no recourse, even if you sign (non refundable) agreement. Can’t put a deposit on something that doesn’t exist.

Yea odd to me that they would need to go through corporate when you physically swiped your card at the dealer. If it's been weeks, I would be pist. You're more patient than I am.

Is it a dealership owned by one of the conglomerates like Autonation or Penske?

That is actually a fair point. When the SA says "corporate," they may be referring to their corporate office and not BMW. Either way, it's your money and they should give it to you.

The dealer is Camelback BMW in Phoenix.

I just sent the sales rep another e-mail and advised I would be disputing the charge if I don't receive a check or the refund on my CC by Monday.

I also copied the GM of the dealership.

I was also thinking that if you do end up going the amex dispute route, it also might be worth making a complaint to BMWNA. Idk how far that would get you, but it might just be another paper trail for you to have as back up.
