Impressed with the G82 6MT time. Randy mentioned that the ZF had trouble choosing the right gear in some tight, low-speed corners, so I'm guessing having full control allowed him to eke out a few tenths.

Fantastic video, although no mention or even a glimpse of the e36 (continues to get zero love).

I have no idea how the base was quicker than the comp. I wonder if Camisa drove the comp and Randy the base.

what does that mean? I'm new to ZF (had 6MT previously) but wouldn't you be choosing the "right gear" by downshifting to the right gear with the ZF?

It was probably picking a higher gear because it’s safer.

I agree. The only explanation is Randy Pobst drove the car in full Auto. I haven't heard reports of the car preventing downshifts when asked (and the revs are plausible, of course).

Pure speculation on my part, but I have a feeling only in the hands of someone like Pobst would the MT be quicker around the track - that is if the competition was truly having trouble with being in the correct gear through the corners (and it wasn't some other issue like tires). For the rest of us mere mortals, the competition will be quicker 10 times out of 10.

As the man says, it's the best iteration he's driven. mike drop!! and Randy would know. G8X is similar to how I feel about the G2X, incredible chassis and this is coming from an E46 fanboy.

Doesn't it always pick the lowest gear selected (that won't over-rev the engine)? I'm talking about S mode not full auto.

that is what I was thinking as well. At least my understanding of how these things work is that full auto = computer selects the right gear. S (manual) you select the right gear in sequential order if its permitted because it won't over-rev the engine.

Sounds like Randy was leaving it in auto as he complained about the programming choosing the wrong gear in hairpin turns. Not surprising that he may have been losing a little time because of it that was not a factor when driving the manual transmission. If you are a manual transmission guy it's good news that in the hands of a skilled driver the car is just as capable as the Competition.

Emphasis on "skilled" or should we say as good a driver as Randy lol

Calling Randy "skilled" is like saying Yao Ming is tall. Sure, it's accurate, but it's not conveying the true reality.

I'm surprised a pro like Randy drove the comp in full auto, and then complained about it not always being in the right gear. If that happens to any driver in any car on any track, the first thing you would do is switch it to manual and take control, specially if that's affecting track times

Out of several autos I've driven (spirited driving, not track) I feel BMW's transmissions communicate well with the driver and hold gear when necessary and quickly learn what the driver wants to do. But of course they'll never be as good as the driver selecting the right gear.

That's a fantastic video by the way!

high praise from someone who bashed the F8x (at least initially when it came out).

My impression was it wouldn't downshift manually, not that Randy was driving it in auto. Great video, if BMW hadn't butchered the styling the car would of been an absolute home run.

I was in the showroom negotiating my M340i order, right next to an M4 in frozen Portimao Blue. It looked so stunning, I almost said forget the order, I'll have that one.

I usually don't stick around for lengthy review videos but... not this one! this review was fun to watch as it was made like a mini documentary and all.

Love the new M3/M4, including the front design! Anyways.. epic video! Thank you!

That's why I don't take any car show seriously, they're just for entertainment purpose.

The presenters always make blanket statements like that. They don't own the cars, they haven't lived with them for a few years. They're providing their opinion based on a 4hr test drive!

AFAIK the M4 isn't any (or not much) lighter, it's certainly less powerful (in base form), but I suppose there could be some chassis tuning differences.

Anyone?
Jason said that the M3 was hesitant to downshift in a few corners and that added up to the time difference.
