Probably seeing who at the dealer can get the best 0-60 times.

Some punks at the dealer beating the shit out of them. Just like 99 percent on this forum would do if they were in those kids shoes. LOL. No different than our wives or girlfriends. Most were rode a bunch of times and had miles. So, these cars are just another thing that got abused before we get them. LOL

Mine had 20, most dealerships weren't even allowing test drives

I looked at nearly 100 g8x's and they were all in the 10-60 mile range

All my ordered cars have had 8–10 miles at delivery.
I doubt the staff kept it under 5500 RPM

Unrelated to the M but about miles on a new car. Last year when the new Supra debuted I wanted it but every dealer in Southern California ( much like this and every other hot car) marked them up 15-40k. I bought mine from the east coast and 2k under MSRP in the color and spec I wanted. I wired the money and they sent me the paperwork to sign the next day vis FEDEX. As I was signing everything I noticed the odometer statement said 149 miles! I lost it and called etc etc. They could not explain it but said no one at the dealership drove it but " blamed Toyota executives that randomly pick cars at the port to drive" NOT KIDDING ...they said this.

I was incredulous but wanted the car, had already wired 63k dollars but wanted my pound of flesh and something else. Long story short Toyota, the owner of the dealership and GM got involved. They sent me a check for 2500 dollars and carbon fiber mirror caps that were 1k dollars. My salesman and sales manger were fired soon after...you ask why?

Because Toyota was so ill prepared to handle this BMW product they could not distinguish between "range remaining" and " actual miles on car" It had 9.

But they concocted Toyota executives joy-riding around the port in my car.

My 18 F80 had 11 miles on delivery
My 20 F82 had 30 miles on delivery (was swapped in from a dealer about 20 miles away)

The dealership has to do a "PDI" (pre delivery inspection) before delivering the car. This involves the mechanic taking the car out of transport mode, changing the tire PSI from 50PSI (to prevent dead spots during transport) to whatever the recommended PSI setting is, they also place a test call to make sure BMW Assist is up and running, and typically they also have to road test the vehicle. For most dealerships, their test driving route is between 5-10 miles.

After the mechanic completes the PDI, the vehicle is sent to detailing. They remove any left over protection films used during transport and they detail the car. After that either your salesman or a dealership valet drive the car to a nearby gas station to get you your full tank of gas.

In some cases, dealers have off site storage lots, depending on the distance (the one my local dealer has is like 20 miles away), could be the explanation for extra miles on the car.

In a nutshell, you car would likely have 10-50 miles on it before delivery due to the reasons above. If it was swapped in, it could have a lot more on it, I think the rule of thumb is if its up to a 4-5 hour drive to get the car, they just have it driven in. Longer than that, they have it flat bedded in.

It was a while ago, but when I picked up my 135i at the Performance Center in 2009 it had 4 miles on it. I'm sure dealer delivered cars will always have a little more.

This! We also should take into account the production location for the vehicle. You can safely assume a person on the east coast of the US and definitely the south will have less miles on a Spartanburg built car since mostly likely they will receive their vehicle via truck or train. The west coast VPC receives all their cars via ship even Spartanburg cars and I think the Mexican made 3ers too. When arriving on ships, you have to consider the distance from the port to the VPC, which level the car is stored on in the ship (which varies based on the load for that voyage to keep the ship balanced), and even the size of the ship. Some car carrier ships are bigger than others. However, I think I would start to complain with anything over 20-30 miles.
