These Windshields Are Terrible + Protection Ideas

I am not sure if I am on my own here, but I have gone through three windshields in 8 months of owning my M3.

My first windshield cracked after 100 miles on the car.

I am tired of shelling out $500 or $1500 on windshields and am looking for ideas on how to keep these stupid things from cracking. Has anyone tried anything or can vouch for any method?

Stek dynoflex windshield film. I have this installed. Film has been helping absorb the impact

The paint sucks too. i have never owned a car before that has more front-end stone chips as this car has. German paint used to be iron clad. Not anymore!

Any clarity issues?

I'm getting this done along with PPF once my car's delivered.
I used to not care for chips on the windshield (have been incredibly lucky) but recently replaced one thru Safelite and the job they've done just sucks. I really don't want to replace windshields anymore and hope Dynoflex really helps.

Is free windshield insurance not an option for you?

I’m at 800 miles and my windshield is being replaced tomorrow. I’m just hoping that Safelite doesn’t screw it up.

And when you say free.

I’m guessing you mean no deductible on an insurance policy that you’ve probably been paying on for several years.

Free yeah

Like free BMW maintenance yeah it’s free

Rightttttt?

Gotcha...that's what I figured.

2011ninja my premium is $4 a month for free windshield and I've already had 3 replaced...so not a bad deal. But I understand your point. We are always paying because the insurance companies screw you over.

State Farm increased my premium 40% from a year ago and they don't even insure new drivers in CA. It's the biggest scam going right now

They increased your premiums by 40% and you still think your $4 dollars got you a “free” windshield?

Your annual premium is what covered the 3 windshields not the $4 monthly premium.

Geico is a zero dollar deductible for windshields in Connecticut

I have 4 cars on my policy.

I’ve had geico a long time anything they cover now I’ve already paid for In premiums over many years.

My favorite post on the forum free maintenance. 🤓

Had a buddy call me once and he actually said he got a free rim from VW for his GTI.

I said how much was the wheel warranty he said $1700

People can’t be that dumb

I’ve read that this is a consequence of moving to water-based paints over over older lead-based paints for obvious reasons.

So PPF for the body and windshield protection film are both must haves if you care about not having chips. But be aware that these are not bulletproof and sufficiently sharp projectiles can pierce them.

$500. $125 to remove later. So $625 to replace.

You’ll likely replace it every 1.5 to 2 years. YMMV as dirty wipers can mar the film over time. If your windshield is clean all the time and water beads off, you can go a long time. If you use the wiper fluid to clean gunk or light dust off, be prepared for scratches.

Yes, you can replace your windshield in 5 years with the money spent on film if you’re careless. But the point is to never lose your factory windshield seal, etc. And to avoid the irritating micropitting the soft windshield glass gets.

My windshield is tinted and I did not notice a difference. I had it done after noticing small chips as well and I believe it’s already saved me $ and most important the time and hassle to get a replacement.

Thank the environmentalists (who then go around driving diesel vehicles in their free time).

Until people start putting fists to faces it’s only gonna get worse. I’m all for responsible companies not polluting the environment, but all we have right now is a green scam.

Or, you know… just suck it up and get ppf like the rest of us lol. Eat the rich baby.

I've had ppf on all of my cars for 20+ years and decided I wanted to go au natural with this one. I wanted to really get the paint finish looking great through my detailing skills. The finish looks amazing now, but I took 2 long distance trips and came back with front end stone chips. I'm looking for someone to do touch-up and will decide then if I want to go with a wrap again.

I understand man, no offense meant.
I was just speaking broad pictures here.
I totally get why someone would not do ppf, it’s not perfect.

For me it made sense.
