For those of you that care/have been frustrated with this setup.

Turns out the wifi connection it keeps asking for is the same as the software upgrade requirement. The key is to follow the instructions given for setup in the MyBMW app, but when connecting wifi to the car you need to make sure the "use internet connection" setting is unchecked. Once I did that it connected, says "complete" under Amazon setup in the app.

Saying "Alexa" brings it up and it now functions perfectly. You will need to either enable "reconnect wifi automatically" on your phone, or do it each time manually, it will not work without a wifi connection from your phone to the car.
