Vibration at speed from brand new, now 18,000 miles in

Hi Everyone. I have a BMW M3 G80 72 plate. Ever since I've had the car from brand new I get a slight wobble/vibration almost the same feeling you get if a wheel isn't balanced at around 85 upwards. I took it back to the dealer and they did the wheel balancing and 4 wheel alignment. It didn't solve anything. I took it back again and they tried the balancing again, nothing changed. So they replaced all 4 wheels. It still didn't solve the problem. You can feel the vibrations through the pedals, the steering wheel and your bum. You can even see the sun visor shaking.

The faster you go the worse it gets. Eventually whilst BMW we're faffing around trying to find the issue, the rear diff started to make some noises, I took it back and they said it needs replacing and thought that might of been causing the vibration. Diff replaced and it still vibrates. I've done 18,000 miles in the car now and I've told them I'm going to reject the car soon and they'll have to replace it. It's currently in BMW hopefully for the last time. They are replacing the transfer box hoping that will solve the problem. Has anyone on here got any ideas, or experienced a similar thing??

Did they reuse the same tires when they replaced your wheels?

Forgot to mention that I've had three different sets of tyres. Two different sets of Pirelli's, and now on P4S.

Garage List
Could be something in the suspension in one of the wheels as well. This is probably what your 3rd or 4th time taking it in? I'd take a look at your state's lemon laws at this point.

Check the center support bearing on the driveshaft. Sounds like it could be an out of balance driveshaft if wheel balance and rotor balance are not causal. If it isn’t located at one corner then I would suspect something in the drivetrain with the multi piece rear driveshaft as the most likely.

Thank you I think you might be right, it feels more central than anything, I will speak to them about it.

going to get the car today after the transfer box has been replaced. BMW believe its fixed it but we've been here before, I will provide an update after I've tested it.

I have the same issue in my car. The vibration is driving me crazy. They told me its normal but I did not accept it. Until I raise the car up for some exhaust work and saw oil in the transfer box. My car has 10k miles on it, with 1000m wheels and yokos. The first response was its normal, the second was change the tyres ( I did not ) and then they ordered a new transfer box after they saw the leak.

I had a similar vibration on my e46m3 and turn out to be from the driveshaft. I will wait for the transfer box and also do a complete check on the driveshaft.

Please share the result after the transfer case

Hi Nick,

Sorry for the late response. I was on my way to pick the car up after the transfer box has been replaced. The technical chap drove it and said it was fixed and no vibration. The deal manager decided to test the car and took it up to a higher speed and noticed the vibration was still there. I was told to leave the car. They are going to replace the center support bearing and see if that resolves the vibration. I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I was told that it will either be the gearbox or sent to technical head quarters to get the final verdict, at which point they might have to replace the car. I will update you when I find out more information. Very frustrating!

Just had an update, Center Support bearing was replaced and still didn't fix anything. They are now replacing both front driveshafts and front diff. Not sure when as yet but will keep you updated, let me know how you get on Nick.

Wheels have been replaced.
Tyres replaced
Balancing done a number of times
Four wheel alignment carried out
Rear Diff replaced (which was faulty)
Transfer box replaced
Center Support Bearing replaced

Waiting for both front driveshafts and front Diff to be replaced.

I can say one things, BMW have been amazing in terms of service support. It has to be the best service I've ever received from a dealer before.

Will provide an update when I have one.

Back when I worked as a Porsche technician, one of the other techs had a Cayenne come in with a similar problem to this. They changed everything they could think of, exactly like your car, and it went on for weeks and I don't think it was resolved by the time I quit the job and moved on to something else. They changed transmissions, driveshafts, tires and wheels, axles, bearings. It just kept coming back, defying physics.

Hi did you repair the car?
I have exactly the same problem since the new car.
Now I have 25,000 km and the vibrations are getting stronger.
My brother also has a m3 xdrive 8000km and has exactly the same thing.
Vibrations from 140km/h+.
