Is a mid pipe a more subtle choice vs axle back and new muffler? Trying to understand the difference between the two options and the third option of combining a mid pipe with an axle back system. I am looking for a subtle change and minimal rasp and NO drone.....

In my opinion, the midpipe is an excellent option for an understated exhaust system. When combined with the stock rear muffler, it creates a seamless match that enables you to enjoy a peaceful ride by shutting the valves, while also delivering a richer and louder tone with the valves open. This configuration assures a drone-free and rasp-free experience, and for the price, it is an unbeatable choice.

I personally chose the mid-pipe option because it offers a little bit of weight savings (20lbs-ish) and a little more sound. Still maintain the ability to close the valves if I want if quiet. I am not 100% sold on/in love with the sound of the car with a full system and beings there is no real performance gain (without tuning) I am holding off for now. Once I decide which route I am going with the tuning I may go ahead and do the rest of the exhaust to maximize gains. Just my 2 cents.

Quick question for you on your resonated versus non-resonated single mid-pipe. How big of a difference in tonality and volume is there between the two? And how would you describe the difference?

My plan is to add a mid-pipe that will eventually play well with a catted downpipe and stock muffler w/ valve controller. Most importantly, no drone. Thanks!

i can answer this as i had this exact setup - 200CEL catted downpipes, non-resonated single mid, oem rear w/valve controller. It was very raspy at mid to high load and rpm. I swapped out the midpipe for the resonated single and it made a large improvement in reducing the rasp. I've since also swapped out the OEM rear section, primarily motivated by aesthetics and weight reduction, but that also further changed the sound to something that i'm now 100% happy with.

i would definitely recommend getting the resonated mid if you plan to remove the OEM downpipes.

That makes perfect sense, thank you for your insight as that will be the ultimate setup I'd be going for. Not a huge fan of rasp personally.

What downpipes do you run?

MAD catted downpipes, MAD resonated single mid, and valvetronic titanium rear section w/ sst valve controller is my current setup.

Got it. I think I'm sticking stock rear muffler, and going with something like MAD 200 catted and resonated single mid. Plus Dahler/SST valve controller (haven't decided which is better).

Do you have any CEL issues with those DPs?

Go resonated 100% !

It doesn't pull much if any real volume just rasp and high pitched sounds caused by high flow downpipes.

my car is tuned so the catalyst monitors are disabled. you'll eventually get a CEL with 200 cpsi downpipes, some people have had success with spacers but it's not a guarantee.

That's exactly what I'm after. Thanks for helping, made up my mind for when the car arrives!

In an ideal world, it would be great to find a spacer / mini-cat combo that works versus having to code out.

Definitely gathering there's no silver bullet setup that guarantees no CEL outside of sticking with stock cats, it's interesting how finicky these cars can be with some having no CEL issues and others having it.

If you are going with a 200 cell downpipe you just need the spacer the mini- cat spacer is for catless dp setups only.

Good to hear, I can't stand a CEL on the dash so avoiding that is great.

With your downpipe and non-resonated single setup, did you have a loud resonance around 3-3.5k? If you did, did the resonated single get rid of it?

I can’t say I recall being bothered by any particularly loud droning, there is of course some when the valves are open but nothing unusual. I actually found that replacing the oem rear with the valvetronic titanium did more to change the sound in that area, the resonated mid mainly reduced the rasp for me.

A couple questions:

1. What's the weight difference with the stock midpipe? Does this save weight?

2. Does this work with the M Performance exhaust? I would think so, but ...

1. Non res is 21 lbs of weight savings.

2. Yes, as long as the M perf connects to the factory cut points (dimples) on the factory exhaust. Based on the diagram below it looks like it does.

Does a resonator matter as much if you're only swapping out the midpipe?
