G80 M3 with F92 M8 Styling - Render
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I have always loved the design of the M8, and wanted to see how those elements would translate onto the G80. My goal was to make a design that blended the M3 and M8, and to smooth out some of the clunkiness that I felt in the current design of the G80. Below are the designs, and list of modifications: Front Bumper: Essentially a swap over of the front bumper from the M8. The M8 is much larger, lower, and longer, so the bumper had to be properly proportioned to fit onto the G80. Mainly it had to be made taller. Hood and hood-line was also carried over from the M8. I would have liked to have seen a power dome, but I was being lazy. Maybe in the future I will add one. Side Grills: One of the first things on the G80 that caught my eye was how unfinished the side grills look. It looks like BMW started making them then stopped 1/3rd of the way through. I thought they should continue downwards towards the side skirt more, following the crease they made in the fender. Again, using the side grill from the M8, re-shaping and re-proportioning, I was able to come up with something I thought looked much more purposeful. Side Skirt: The blacked out portion of the G80's side skirt looked really clunky to me; Aftermarket, and not in a good way. I smoothed out and "painted" the side skirt to match the body color. I used the shape of the current side skirt protrusion on the G80, shrunk it down, and moved it to the bottom of the side skirt. I thought this was a cleaner solution, while still maintaining extension BMW had established. Rear Bumper: Like the side skirts, the blacked out portions BMW added to the rear bumper made the whole thing look clunky. First, I deleted them by adding the lower section of the M8 rear bumper. Next I took the triangular "vent" and reflector from the M8, and integrated it into the horizontal line that extends from the trunk to the rear bumper. Only the edge of the rear diffuser had to be reshaped to work with the new shape of the bumper. Other: Car got a subtle drop, window tint and debadge on the rear. The color is Hockenheim Silver. The original images are from BMW's Individual Visualizer. Last edited by E36 PWR; 01-12-2021 at 11:50 AM.. |

Nicely done. With the addition of a power dome, it would be perfect.

That looks great!
I really like the styling of the M2cs, M5, M8, even the G20. The 4 series and G8X grilles just look too tall it overpowers the entire car. |

I feel that a conservative design like this would've made more people happy but less people excited.
I support the new grill design & expect it to look wicked in person.

A conservative design like this would end up just like the M8 coupe... canceled in the US market

I really like the removing of these stupid (ricey and cheap looking) black side skirts and blacked out portions on the rear. In addition, I would prefer the diffuser to be a bit more subtle.

I agree this looks boring and the M3 shouldn't look like an 8 or be boring. However, there is a middle ground between boring and weird. That's where I wish the G8X would have landed.

The good news is this thread has little to no activity. If this was 4 months ago, it would have been on page 24 by now. Perhaps people are at the acceptance stage?

I dig it and thinks it's an improvement. I think the renders give good feedback to the aftermarket on what grill-haters like myself think. If the performance metrics are there, bumper swaps should be relatively straight forward and expand the appeal of the car.

Must be in the minority here. I love the work OP. Conservative but... A car I would actually be very interested in buying, vs... a car I have zero interest in buying (actual form).
I think the G80 is a flop design wise, meh. Sure it's been talked about but, it remains. They could have done something different with it, something more cohesive.

Absolutely. I wish people would stop with the renders already. Sure, I'd prefer if the grilles looked more like that, but they don't and they won't so I've accepted the new look.

Disagree, love design, so always open to people exploring that regardless of if the car is in production. Especially if people plan to mod the car aftermarket. Car was enough of a flop design wise, that I think it is still intriguing to look into other possibilities. Not for everyone I guess. I still find it interesting and like this one in particular.
