S58 Compatible DME Part Numbers
Hey guys, does anyone have a list of compatible DME part numbers which work with the S58 motor? More specifically, I’m looking to pick up an additional DME that’s pre-lock so that I can clone and want to pick one up with an early date. Found a couple of 2019 ones, but they’re not specific to the S58 per se, but are structurally the same as the S58 ones.
Which early DMEs (part number wise) can run an S58? |

Pretty sure a few shops have already tried this and it didn't go anywhere as far as I know.

If this was easy to do everyone would do that. Instead everyone uses FEMTO. I think short answer to ur Q is: It’s not going to happen.

I’m more interested (since they are identical physically) what differences there are between a B58 and S58 DME. If the boards and pinouts on the plugs are identical, then it’s all just software. I don’t see why BMW wouldn’t have used a single DME for both of these platforms and saved money instead of individualized ECUs for each. Wiring differences would simply be handled on the harness side with some pinouts from the DME not being used on the B58 since it has one less fuel pump and turbo and possibly some sensor differences. Seems like the logical approach they’d take and just differentiate it via software. |

Well, out the box it won’t run anyway, for more obvious reasons than just like any S58 ECU won’t crank the car until it’s associated with it. That said, I’d love to hear if anyone has actually opened up one from like an M240 or M440 and compared them to the S58 ones. If they’re identical, a clone should work. Externally they look the same. The external differences aren’t seen until you get down to the 2.0L engines… those DMEs are physically shorter on the casing.

Is this route similar to what Jackie at PHD recently did with his M2?

Hey, thanks for that video. Jackie doesn’t go into exact detail on what DME he’s running, but I wanna say he got himself an easy X3M/X4M S58 DME, got FEMTO to just clone his stock one and then had EcuTek flash it, which they can do with the early ones. There’s still some slightly misleading info online with some EcuTek dealers and people saying EcuTek will work on all 21-current DMEs for the S58 engine, but no mention of that’s after a FEMTO unlock or their own bench unlock. It’s hard to believe EcuTek worked out the new unlocks and no info went viral online yet. That said, I’m interested to know if the newer locked DMEs can run EcuTek after an unlock from FEMTO because some are saying the unlock FEMTO is doing to the new DME isn’t really the same as the 19 DME XM units. I’ve got a message to Jackie to ask what DME he’s running.

OK, so apparently the B58 DME is the same hardware that the S58 is, just software on it is where the differences are. I guess the question now is, can someone like FEMTO actually image the entire ECU software and firmware code over from an S58 DME to the box codes that are on the B58 DMEs? Anyone have any connections to find this out?

Any update on this? There is so much conflicting info online that it's just straight up annoying me now lmao.
I'm curious though: what's the benefit of cloning to another DME? Wasn't it stated that BMW/ISTA can still see that the car was tuned by digging into it? Would FEMTO even be able to clone the DME without modifying the stock one? I know the ultimate goal here is to get a DME that is tuneable while keeping the OEM one in it's original state but is that really even possible?

They never replied. Yes the idea is you clone your original DME and then you play the swap game between tuned and untuned with the other one as needed. Technically it should be plug and play, but the mileage won’t line up on the ECU, if they’re like Audi ones where the ECU keeps a km record as well.
