Anyone know what this whine is?
Hey guys I’ve noticed the car makes a whine at idle. It’s done this for as long as I can remember it. This is my first turbo’d car so I was wondering if this is a normal operation of the S58.
(Attached is the video) Engine whine There isn’t any codes being thrown or loss of power I’ve noticed. Thanks! |

Definitely pulley/belt related, go to the dealer if it bothers you.

I was thinking a pulley/idler too. Our engines are known for the loud DI ticking and HPFP clatter, but not squeaks and squeals.
Have the dealer take a look, or just call and then text the vid to their cell. Any increase in squeak/squeal with mild revs?

None that I notice, in fact the opposite. With revs and while under load it goes away.

Understood. I’d still see the dealer.

Sounds like an idler pulley. Other vehicle blower cars ive had would sound like that when the idler bearing was inproperly grease packed or even was missing right out of the box new. And would disappear with revving. These were belt idlers.
I use a mechanic stethoscope (metal rod) and you can clearly hear the problem part by pressing it againt the various parts. Of course not the pulley itself but the shaft near. Could also put it aginst the hpfp and hear the pump internals for fun. The valve type clatter sound like Tommy said is mainly the HPFPs as the pumps run off the cam. . Or if you are under warranty just take it in. |

Hey guys just wanted to provide a quick update. My appointment is for this Friday with an oil change but the sound is completely gone at this point. The car is not my daily driver but I did drive it Friday-Sunday as I was installing a new mid pipe and noticed no more whine. My SA has the original video and already reached out to me regarding the issue saying he has it "documented" and is ready to look at. My guess is at the time of recording there must've been some type of dirt/road grime or debris that maybe made its way to the idler/pulley? Will see what he says! LOL

Getting this properly diagnosed is a pain in the ass to say the least. If it doesnt do it one morning, it basically has to wait another day or two to try again.
