Was it cause of the weight they changed to soft top? i really like the way the f83 looked in hardtop, but held off cause g83 was coming. Debating on now getting a 2020 f83, but i want the new technology, awd and higher hp.
i wanted e93 bought e92, wanted f83 bought f82, now i want g83 most likely getting g82. Once the awd is ready to order , i will decide then, for now i will keep going back and forth on my decision till the configurator is up for awd g83/g82

Doubtful, although I'm sure the marginal weight savings didn't hurt the case.

The primary reason they ditched the hardtop is probably due to the fact that every other four seat hardtop convertible had left the market. In fact, even two seat hard top convertibles are pretty uncommon these days. The trend has for the most part run its course. So, from a cost perspective, it's probably no longer the best choice because now your supplier simply doesn't have the volume anymore.

A lot, the F83 was 200kg heavier than the F82 with the metal folding roof, as we've seen the new G82 M4 is 1800kg then a metal folding roof would have given us a 2000kg M4 convertible, so they have had to take every opportunity to reduce the weight, I still think we're looking at a car weighing 1900kg+ though.

I suspect the length of the roof could be a reason. I can’t recall having seen a car of the old 6 series size and now the 4 series with a folding hard top roof. The complications to stove it away must be great as the length increases.

Wondering how old these pics might be. You'd think the front, side skirts, and mirrors could have the camo off by now.

I like those wheels a lot but I can't tell if they are "bi-color" and tinted with a dark clear or if they do actually have silver faces and the wheels are just dirty.

I want this design with silver faces to pair with IOMG since I prefer this design to the other wheel.

Softtop looks so much better in my opinion. The lines of the hardtop verts just didn't work for me, plus the weight was crazy. Always looked like a retrofitted afterthought. This gen looks very nicely integrated and fluid.

IND or whomever have the opportunity to make a fortune if they can come up with a good 8-series style retrofit front end

Don't see the appeal of a convertible performance vehicle, it's a contradiction. Surprised these sell at all, 2 completely different market demographics I would have thought.

There is a small group of buyers, such as myself, who love to combine fast acceleration and decent handling with an open top.

Of course the extra weight means a marginal decrease in performance but for me the marginal benefit of being able to cruise with the top down is very worth it.

I would never think of the M4 convertible as a track car, rather a GT.

Also, I'd never consider buying a coupe. To me, I don't really understand the benefit of having two fewer doors if you CAN'T put the top down.

Man, I certainly hope so. This is the one I've been waiting for. Though I've heard rumours to the contrary.

The altrenative is a 911 but I don't like the look, or paying double...

Surprised to hear that, to me it seemed 2 opposite ends of the owner spectrum, I believed those buying an M4 were interested in performance & spirited driving whereas those buying a convertible were interested in self appearance & boulevard cruising. I guess there are always exceptions & crossovers.

I wholeheartedly agree with NewDirection in saying the M4 vert is an a option that I would be interested in as well. In fact, you'd be surprised how many people do like this option, if not for the high price tag. In my mind, the new M3/4 is no longer a pure sports care. It is a cruiser in my mind, akin to the M5. If you really care about sporty performance, there are many great options, from a Miata in the low end to Porsche / lotus in the high end.

The M3/4 was already compromised from the beginning. Not saying that as a negative, in fact, a positive. The M3/4 was always a practical car that had sporty characteristics. And for owners who want one car to appease both practical and fun. Now, even though I like the M4, the cost is prohibitive. All in, you're probably looking at close to 100K! And for my purposes, I probably would go for the M3.

If you want a truly drivers car in BMW's lineup. You would have to go M2. And even then, it's still very heavy.

Now back to the M4 vert. A great afternoon or early morning cruiser with open air experience.

"Was it cause of the weight they changed to soft top?"

I have a 430 hard top right now. Take it for what it's worth, but the dealer told me they ditched the hard top not for weight, but rather because the repair costs are astronomical if someone gets rear-ended with the top down. In many instances, the car is totaled because the top and and all of the moving parts deep in the trunk get destroyed.

I think in this situation it would be for both. Weight and cost.

Although even the soft top mechanism is still very expensive if you got hit from the rear.

As an owner of three 335i convertibles so far I can say that the top mechanism is a like a transformer. Awesome to watch in action, very complicated and nearly impossible to fix if the car takes a hard hit to the rear end. I gave up on my first convertible 335i project car. The rear end had been hit and not fixed right, my freind ran the BMW body shop and said the convertible tops are incredibly hard to repair when the car is hit hard.
BUT, I love having the hardtop. It makes the car a coupe when closed. No wind noise, odd look of a short life fabric roof, etc. Then I open the top and have a nice open air ride. Yes, it is a bit heavier, so I just added more power with upgraded turbos, fuel, pipes, intercooler, etc. Speed and fun in one package FTW!

I love my two unicorns, former 2018 F83 ZCP and current 2018 X5M. When I want to track, I fly over to Germany and train with BMW M. Otherwise, I enjoy the top down driving living in a warm weather climate and when I need more cargo room, that's what the X5M is for.

The convertible is a niche market, as you need an other car, unlike the M3 which can do it all.

EDIT: eagerly awaiting SOP for the G83.
