Achilles Heel of the G8x

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Anybody have any ideas what it may be? We know with the E9x it seemed to be the rod bearings, and in F8x it was the crank hub closely followed by the TMIC leaking. Anybody have any ideas or already seeing the same issue across multiple G8x cars? Maybe we could even keep tabs on reoccurring issues early so BMW could possibly address it. Just curious!

IMO, the controversial front end , transmission (no DCT) , and weight. None of which personally bother me.

I meant in reference to actual issues. Like things that fail, not just personal opinions but I get what you mean.

I suggest you maybe check the X3M forums because I believe that car has had this engine for a while now and there are plenty of them tuned. You might get some idea there but I think the general consensus so far is that with all the forged internals the S58 has, its very solid, but realistically only time will tell.

BMW has managed to chronically f*ck something up with every generation.

This is exactly why I’m asking lol. Without doubt this platform will have its own epic disaster. Just a matter of what and when.

BMW record is not that bad actually, the B58 and N55 have been very reliable.

I think they're referring to true "M' motors, the S series.

Hey don't forget the actuators on the E9x. A small piece of plastic that should have been metal causing a $4k repair job.

Especially when you take out all the modified engines and look at people that are staying completely stock and maintaining.
Every issue is exacerbated when the car is modded and driven hard.

Garage List
Anyone else concerned with the fact that there are no bushings on the rear subframe? Asking as an e46 m3 owner .

True that.

And BMW is not alone. We know all about them, as Bimmerphiles, but Porsche (generally recognized as one of the best engineering car companies) has had many different engine issues including bearings, seals, cylinder liners and fires, Mercedes are often regarded as money pits and of course Audi, which makes great cars that are in the shop almost as often as Maseratis. GM's premier performance car, the Z06 Corvette, often cannot survive a day at the track without overheating and going into limp-home mode, and if you spend a few hours on a Mustang forum you'll see that those guys have to spend thousands to rectify design issues that still exist on a nearly 60 year-old platform.

Where on earth do you get a $4k job from? I was the one that wrote the DIY for it, and it's a couple hours job, and the whole part replacement is $1k. Hardly a fortune when it comes to older M maintenance.

BMW quoted $1200 (Canadian) for each actuator. Both banks and a 10 plus hour job to change them. I didn't do the work but I had BMW Canada pickup majority of the tab and my issue wasn't even the actuators. They had to change all my wire harnesses to resolve my "Limp Mode".

Probably the same issues as every other bmw dating back to 2006 when the first N54s rolled off the line, but not as bad as before as my modem BMWs are much more reliable compared to my older ones. High mileage will result in similar repairs I suspect.

- Valve cover cracking
- Oil filter housing gasket leaking
- Failed / leaky Injectors
- Fuel pump
- Water pump
- Intercooler leaking
- Oil cooler getting smashed when hitting debris on the road
- Random sensors around the car failing due to age
- Oil pan gasket / leaks
