Simply spoken, M Traction Control is a slip control mechanism that controls rear wheel slip in 10 stages when DSC is switched off. Level 0 is OFF and allows for unlimited wheel spin. The higher levels allow for very limited slip. The slip is controlled using the engine‘s rpm as the only parameter. The vehicle’s yaw rate is not a controlled parameter here. In contrast to M Traction Control, MDM is a part of the DSC mechanism and actively controls the vehicle‘s yaw rate. DSC/MDM use engine power controls as well as brake interventions to stabilize the vehicle dynamics on the road. MDM uses M Traction Control levels 4 to 7 depending on yaw rate behaviour." https://www.bmw-m.com/en/topics/maga...n-control.html |

Question for those with M Drive Professional package.
If you must have DSC off to engage 4WD Sport, does that basically mean you have absolutely no chassis stabilization intervention in this mode? No MDM and no DSC?

I run 4WD Sport in MDM mode as my M2 button. 10 stage traction control is only available for AWD if DSC is fully off and transmission set for 2WD, I believe.

I thought the 10 stage traction control only had to do with varying stages of traction in RWD mode….and had nothing to do with either of the AWD modes (4WD and 4WD Sport). No? In other words….if I don't care at all about going full RWD….will M Sport Professional make any difference to me whatsoever?

This is what I'm trying to figure out because I need to decide whether to add this option to my car or not.

4WD: no requirement 4WD Sport: requires DSC to be off, but you can have MDM on. RWD: DSC off, MDM off M Traction control (0 - 10): must be in RWD (which means DSC and MDM are off)

Not precisely relevant but a question relating anyways.
Does this seem like something most tuners will "throw in" in the future (whenever everyone breaks the ECU open) like Euro MDM on the E92? |

To summarize: If you have a RWD car, M Drive Professional is probably only worth it for drifting. If you have xdrive, it's good for drifting AND if you want to put it in RWD mode sometimes and still have traction control. Stage 7 is close to what MDM is.
