To OP - good call on the poll. I've always been curious as to whether this was a prevalent issue or if just a vocal minority. I know this isn't a scientific study but still provides good insight.

The brakes on my G80 are squeaky. As others have said a continuous series of quick stops quiets them down. My previous E90 and 2 F80s had no noise. Love the stopping power though so hesitant to change pads.

Reposting my comment from one of the previous threads.

While developing brake system for any vehicle, suppliers and OEMs have specific targets for performance, longevity, NVH and cost. Based on the vehicle, they would concentrate on one aspect and compromise the rest. Its not a surprise that most performance vehicles have NVH issues as they would focus on performance.

I totally understand that it's a high performance vehicle but so was my F80 and I never had noise so consistent and loud as my G80. The only time I had noise from my F80 was right after it rained and after I washed it. I feel like I need a CDL with my G80.

Yes, can definitely hear with windows up. Can hear from hundreds of yards away. I don’t have an M car, but a ‘23 840i.

A video for your viewing pleasure:

For anyone coming to this thread -- yes brake whine on performance brakes is normal. But, if you are hearing something like in this video, it's not normal. BMW is aware. I've had extensive communications with BMW NA and Germany related to this issue. They've acknowledged an engineering defect in the pads -- evidently, at the right temperature a gas is being produced that is causing this resonance to occur.

It is possible to mitigate this issue by bedding the brakes. Two problems: First, you can't always get up to speed to bed the brakes -- like in the video when I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on I-70 westbound through the mountains for three hours. Second, this is only a temporary fix -- the noise will return. There also seems to be a relationship between reported incidences and warm weather climates. Anecdotally, my problem has dramatically improved during the winter months, but it is still present under certain conditions.

Just as an FYI, my vehicle was personally inspected by some of BMW's German engineers who were in Colorado for a technician training. I was told by one of them that they view this as unacceptable but that the corporate line is going to be "this is normal, performance brakes are supposed to be noisy." I was told that a recall is very likely. I guess we'll see what happens. In the meantime, I hope folks enjoy their 100k+ vehicles sounding like a cross between a train and a dying whale, which is how the foreman of the local BMW dealership described it to me.

I had 50 miles on my G82 when I started hearing a break squeak. I thought maybe it will go away after a few hundred miles, but it hasn't. I followed plenty of cleaning methods to help alleviate the squeak but nothing worked thus far.
