Maybe. Get back to me after 15k miles - that’s when both of my Teslas started falling apart. Rattles, squeaks, feeling shoddy, smells, etc. I believe they’ve gotten better, but need proof.

Meanwhile, my M3 is breaking in beautifully, as always…

Btw don’t call the model 3 p the M3 or M3P. Even Tesla forums disallow such behavior.

I've been hearing the same thing for the past 10 years. Tesla quality has vastly improved! And then you read user reviews of the Cyber Truck and realize it's all bullsh!t.

Exactly.

I looked at them and test drove them and they were just cheap. Granted I was in a vehicle costing $150k more but still. I don’t even look at them.

There is a lowered one with rims that revs on me and I held up a cardboard sign that said “build back better at its finest”.

Not sure how anyone could look at what this car brings to the table for ~55k and knock it. Sub 3 0-60, adjustable suspension, bespoke interior and exterior elements, etc.

Is it my cup of tea? No. but lots of copium in here from BMW folks. Kind of embarrassing.

A coworker buddy of mine is one of the Tesla evangelists that have been mentioned in this thread. He's on his third Model 3 (just got the new performance model) and second Model Y. He was never a car guy before, but loves to talk cars, but mainly just Teslas now. I've driven his last Model 3 and ridden in it. It's very quick, and laugh out loud fun to romp on. But then it gets boring. The interiors are boring. The exterior is boring. The build quality is just ok.

I'm not anti EV nor anti Tesla, but they serve a particular purpose I think, and it isn't the joy of owning a sporty car. It would be a good car to own for purposes of getting to and from work, especially if you charge at home and have easy access to a charging network anywhere you might travel. I've sorta, kinda considered rolling the dice on a slightly used one for an inexpensive runabout and commuter vehicle since they're getting so cheap. I've never considered replacing my M4 with one though. And while I understand the comparisons that people like to make to other performance oriented vehicles, like the G8X, people who seriously consider getting a Model 3 over an M3 are not the same type of "car guy" that I am. We all have different tastes, I guess.

1) it’s a more nuanced conversation - and this thread is very positive about the performance to price ratio while being honest about the shortcomings by comparison.

2) don’t see anything to be embarrassed about here. Soapboxing is embarrassing though.

The premise that this thread sort of started with was addressing or responding to those who have basically rendered the M3 irrelevant by way of the new Tesla model 3 performance while emphasizing the strengths of the Tesla and admitting its weaknesses. But it also started with comparing the new model 3 performance with the i4m50 as a direct comparison. Haven’t seen much discussion by way of that comparison.

At the end of the day I think having one of each is a good approach. But for me, if it came to one or the other, it’s the M3.

its a great one car solution for most people. it can corner, crazy acceleration, especially the 5-60 where even the last model 3p left the g80. completely silent which can be a plus or minus. As a daily driver i think its better than any modern M.

However it is nowhere near as exciting. No gears. No downshifts. Nobody is going to drive an SUV all week and pull out there model 3 for the weekend.

cost to own g80 and m3p will be similar. tesla is cheaper but it will depreciate way harder.

This is it. Exactly.

The Model 3 is a great one car solution for someone that wants a vehicle that they can have a relaxing commute to work, and then punch it a few times on the way home for grins. It is not the kind of car people take out to the canyons or countryside on an early weekend morning just to "go for a drive." Getting up at dawn an going on a 100mi drive to nowhere, windows down and maybe stopping somewhere for a coffee along the way is one of the true joys of fun car ownership for me, and that's just not the Tesla's thing.

While I wouldnt want one as my “weekend” or “fun” car, they do make incredible DDs. Currently have a Model Y Performance as a DD with a Golf R 6MT and it’s been a great combo. I have the new Model 3 Performance on order to replace the MYP and I suspect it will be even better in that role.

So yes, best setup would be to have a Tesla supplementing an ICE IMO.

Or an iXM60 which is supremely lovely & M3 6MT combo. Much better imo!

Have you ever raced anyone from 5-60 though, honestly?

I have been racing most of my life and never once have I been in a race from 5 to 60 so that measurement seems irrelevant IMO. It's either typically from 0, 20, 40, 50, 60mph. Regardless though a tuned G80/82 still spanks it even on a tame OTS map.

I get tuning isn't for everyone, though.

Cyber truck is not the same as a Model 3 that has been in production for 7-8 years now.

I had two model 3's, the first had about 35k miles on it when it met an untimely end due to a large chunk of metal in the road. My 2020 had 40k miles when I traded it in. Neither was falling apart, had excessive rattles, etc. Both did have the funky air con smell that I constantly had to deal with.

But in the end they are still Tesla Model 3's and parts quality is incredibly cheap. The post 2020 refresh got a LITTLE better.

not really talking about racing. its more about real world performance and acceleration at a moments notice. no need to downshift or wait for a turbo to spool to start moving. even at 60mph cruising, i'd bet the tesla can shoot a gap in traffic faster.

still... im interested to see what kind of lap times reviewers get on the tesla compared to an g8x. obviously for consistent lapping and track days the g80 will be better

You're saying faster than stock G80 right? If so I would whole heartedly agree with that.

There are plenty of dragy times showing no gap would be shot faster then anything other then a plaid from the Tesla line up, If the G80 is even mildly tuned however.

Not for a Bimmerpost forum. Not a flex. I mean, promoting a VW and a Tesla on this forum might more aptly be viewed as a weird humblebrag.

Two dailies for a 2-car combo makes no sense.

How about 3? X7 also. We have 3 kids, so it’s nice to drop them off and blitz up to the mountains. Or just enjoy rowing the gears. I had a Z4 before it, but the M3 suits my style. Love the car and don’t mind lugging the extra seats on my solo excursions. The alternative options are either too expensive (911) or too cheap and slow. Plus I’ve always been an M3 guy, ever since my e46.

I also think it’s funny that the M3 and iX make “no sense” while the GTI and model 3 do. ??? Bizarre.

Anecdotally, I’d much rather have the new Model 3 Perf and a Golf R than an M3 and Ix, but that’s just fodder anyways.

In regards to the Model 3 Performance, does anyone know if it also gets the 7500 tax credit? That would put it in the high 40s after the credit which is just bonkers.

It does if you qualify.

Why would you prefer the golf R + model 3 p? Just curious

Just not a huge fan of the iX design language tbh. I’m sure it’s wonderful though.

I currently have a MK8 Golf R and a M3 comp x and can tell you that the Golf R is insanely good. Not better than the M3 though haha
