My favorite manual transmission was either my 330i ZHP or E34 525i, with the E85 close behind. The ZHP and Z4M had short, clear throws; the E34 was smooth as warm butter. Going from the E34 to the E39 540 6spd was a letdown in the transmission/clutch department (but certainly an upgrade in other areas).

Looking to get a G80 after my M340i lease is up but I am having a hard time deciding between MT and AT
If I get AT I am afraid that the G80 will feel pretty similar to the M340i (same trans + won't be using all of the G80's power on public roads). On the other hand, I am afraid that the MT will frustrate me especially after hearing BMW clutch engagement is vague. Before the M340i I drove the 86/BRZ first gen and GTI last gen MTs. I would always smile when driving but I sometimes got annoyed with day-to-day errands. Going up a parking garage ramp into a busy pedestrian crosswalk and having Prius up my ass was never fun even with hill assist. My OCD nature also had me paranoid I was burning the clutch so I would always try to take off with the lowest amount of RPMs. The G80 has a ton of torque so I was hoping all of this would go away in a modern MT but I wanted to see how the G80s MT felt from actual owners. |

The E90 M3 was pretty good, and my current F30 328 isn't bad. But the throws are a bit longer and the feel just a bit more vague than some other makes I have driven. I thought the G82 I drove recently was better than most.

There is nothing wrong with this manual. And I have owned many to compare with including the infamous s2000 that everyone says is so great. And it is, but different in its own way. Either learn to drive it properly and understand it's capabilities, or sell your car and go by a Honda. Too many Karen's in here.

I can't create a new post for some reason but has anyone had an issue with the clutch pedal? I was driving yesterday and went from 3rd to 2nd and heard a crunching noise coming from the clutch pedal. After another 5 shifts, this fell on the floor mat. Looks like a spring and the clutch feels softer. Am I the only one that had this happen?

I traded my 2020 330i M-sport for a 2022 M3 MT...I went from "this is fun, I can do things" to "holy shit how did I tolerate an automatic for this long". This is my third BMW MT, the previous two were a 328i sedan and 328i coupe. The M3 transmission feels very similar to those, but the clutch feels longer. Also, the 1->2 shift took a couple of days to figure out and I can't stand the rev matching, but it turns off. One thing I also noticed, it's damn near impossible to stall this car. It gives an rpm boost in first so you can get it moving from a stop to about 5mph without touching the gas pedal. Noticed it in heavy traffic and admittedly that was a pleasant surprise. Made sitting in traffic way less frustrating for having a MT. But man...overall, love it to pieces and have no idea why they even bother with AT. Last edited by Sparapet; 04-02-2022 at 08:19 AM.. |

Prolly more of a bmw thing. On my 5th bmw manual (last one was a 550) and all have been fine. Not much of a gamechanger to make me switch
But i get ya…I had Acura and Hondas before..and their clutch was buttery smooth but ofcourse they were 180hp engines so probably much easier to harness that power (or lack thereof). I'm still very jerky with the 1-2 gear Shift in my m3 but I'm Attributing that to me not being used to it yet.

Also, I just came from a 2019 WRX STI and feel like this thing shifts stupid easy. The auto rev match makes it child's play. I've got full titanium exhaust & intake with downpipe and it seems like as aggressive it sounds the shifting almost didn't match, due to how smooth it was. Not seeing a reason (yet) to even do CDV del or anything? At 6000 miles right now.
