The fins on the original fender liners are there for 2 reasons. First, they allow cooling airflow from the radiators to pass through into the fender wells and be dispersed. Secondly, they prevent debris picked up by the tires from being flung into the radiators, damaging their soft fins.
In normal use the amount of "stuff", its size, weight, velocity, and thus impact speed is not enough to damage the fins, and allow "stuff" to get through into the radiators. Up the speed sufficiently (track driving, that would be me), and the "stuff" will break off the fins on impact leaving the radiators exposed to damage. Ask me how I know. I have had to replace the fender liners 3 times over the years because all but a few of the fins had been broken out, and my radiators were taking a pounding (mostly by tire marbles). Each time I replaced the liner I would scoop out a dozen or more large marbles and broken fins from the shelf below the radiators. Fortunately the radiators were not damaged and I was able to straighten the bent vanes with a knife. My shop came up with a MacGyver fix that protects the radiators but the fins still get broken out. Not ideal but workable. They placed a wad of plastic filter material between the liner fins and the radiators. The material is kind of like the plastic scrubbies we use on pots, pans, and dishes. I have had my current liners for about 8 months now with only a few fins remaining, but at least my radiators are protected. I do however wonder if some of the airflow through the radiators is being blocked by the "scrubbies". These aluminum plates look like they would allow substantially better airflow and I will be ordering soon.

Just tried putting my 20" winters from my 2023 M2 onto my new 2025 M4 Coupe and it rubbed really bad. Will this Ali Express fender mod work for 275/30/20 Winter Michelins....????

It should! Are you lowered? Spacers? I’m lowered with 12mm spacers and no rub with 285/30/20 ps4s

For those who had these mesh/plates for a while, how is it working for you?
I'm about to install a set (RKP replacement liners modified with the mesh), and I'm wondering if without the stock angled fins, small debris/pebbles can make it through the mesh and hit the radiator and accumulate in front of the radiator. Has this been an issue for you? any downside of installing these without the stock fins? Last edited by sycd; 01-08-2025 at 10:29 AM.. |

These plates were actually designed to use with spacers. When installing spacers you must cut out the fins in the fender liner. When you do this, all the track debris thrown forward by the tires will impact the radiators unless something (the aluminum plates) are installed to block it. If not using spacers you can leave the fins in place if you chose, but they will break off over time from the pounding they take. The aluminum plates are the best protection for the radiators. Oh, and a dab of loctite on the nuts and bolts wouldn't hurt either.

The instructions that come with the plates tells you to cut off the fins in the fender liner when using spacers. Otherwise you will still get rubbing, especially if you increase the tire size toward max. I don't think the addition of the MPHAS kit will make any difference in rubbing because the actual height change is not that great. However, since you are running considerably larger tires and wheels than stock, I guess it's possible. Unless someone else shows up here with the same setup, I guess you are going to have to be a pioneer on this one. Good luck.

Since you already have slight markings of where it's rubbing, maybe take a heat gun and slightly push those sections of the liner inwards.

If you had 285s up front with stock wheels and it did rub, do you HAVE to modify the fender liner? If you just let it rub would it damage the tire or just cause an annoying sound from time to time? Would the tire eventually rub away at the liner enough to make the rub go away?

I’m all for DIY projects but I watched a YouTube on this mod and looks like a pain in the ass for something that doesn’t absolutely need to happen. So 285s will DEFINITELY rub though right? |

I wouldn’t worry about it in 285 since you’re inclined to not deal with this mod. It would probably only rub at full lock mostly backing out of a parking space anyway.

In that case I would be surprised if you get any rubbing with 285
