My friend is a master tech at my local BMW dealer. I asked him to confirm this; which I also agree is not true.
He said the only thing his computer disables or changes are some additional break in checks and balances the computer has running during break in. No power is uncorked. Launch control is not activated. It's a simple oil and diff fluid change with some additional engine checks disabled. So this confirms THERE. IS. NO. UNLOCK. PS: the service rep I saw for my break in service also told me they would unlock power. lol. I just let it go as I knew it wasn't true. I've done this 6-7 times now with BMW m cars.

Just had mine done and they offered it with "competition" special performed. I asked what it was and they just said they'd reprogram DME from 19psi boost to 24.5psi and changed my badges to Competition. Which is not what I wanted to get so they changed my badges back to normal classic M3.
All in all pretty important service and now I can let her rip.

I'd just like to say that keeping the G80 under 5.5k RPM and 100 mph has been very very very difficult. I'm only at 160 miles too

It's so damn difficult. I'm at like 67 miles, hoping I have time to take a fun drive Sunday before the superbowl.

Yeah.. about that break in. Uh, I'm kind of just not really caring about it and just enjoying the car haven't redlined it but I have seen the shift lights come on a few times and 115 mph comes so quickly, I can't be faulted for enjoying the torque in the lower rev range.
I'll get the service done at 900 miles but I'm starting to care less about babying the damned thing. It's so much fun

1069 miles in 7 months? Wow... I'm doing mine after 2 weeks. Took a long road trip to break her in.

I actually just found another local dealer that'll take me in and has the fluid. I'm at 812 miles and may have to do some driving in the next day so I can get this thing in on Friday! Any disadvantages to going right around the 900 mile mark? I know it's "technically" allowed any time after 900….just thought I'd check if there were any obvious disadvantages.

I brought mine in at around 1060 miles, but I had the fluids in the car too long (7 months), so I figured it was the right time. |

It's just loosening up as already said. I had an M340i before the M4 (no run-in service required. It got louder the more miles I did (and faster).
