So yes everyone should wait one model year.
based on how quickly the released the M5C, then id bet only a few months later or maybe even at the same time (a la AMG)
It's better if they release them simultaneously MB style since consumers won't be remorseful towards BMW for letting them buy an M car then release a competition version a short while after.
F90 did exactly that and it was a tad unfair on early adopters!
I believe the F90 competition was announced months after the base F90 release.
...yes that is what I'm saying...seems like the F90 Comp came just months after the base car, rather than ZCP style 12-18 months later or simultaneously. Worst scenario for early adopters...
Oh I understand what you mean now. Yeah that's definitely a giant middle finger to early adopters.

I meant announce the two trims simultaneously that way buyers wouldn't need to wait two years for the comp pack/trim. This would also avoid screwing over buyers that want the comp but settled for the base because they thought it would be two years before the release of the comp.

I believe that's what Mercedes does. Releases the 63 and 63s simultaneously. Or at least announces them together.
I'm gonna disagree with this, any enthusiast who was following the M5 release closely enough to A be one of the first to order and B truly care about missing out on the comp pack should have been fully aware the comp pack was going to be a fast follow release. That information was readily available here and on other enthusiast sites. Basically the punishment is for not doing research.

So for anyone wanting an M3 comp pack pay close attention to what bmw and the "leaks" have to say during the lead up to M3 release and it will be easy to make an educated decision.
I disagree with you that F80 competition release information was available when f80 was launched. I was following the leaks etc but with nothing official you can only guess. Like other said, bmw should do as they did with this M5 and as MB has been doing and announce what's coming. This way I can choose to buy now or wait and not feel that BMW is playing games with us.
Actually my above comments were related to the complaints around the F90 launch where the comp pack came only a few months after launch. it was pretty clear the M5 comp model would be coming at launch or immediately after.

I think we actually fundamentally agree that's the right way to do it (at or just after launch) vs dragging it out a few years (f80/f82) as some random mid cycle boost

This is still an early mule with not many specific M parts. No carbon roof, no M-Mirrors. And probably wearing regular 3 Series front fascia and not the one M3 or M4 will have.

Patience it will be there.

Okay, say they go AWD.

What happens when they make a GTS or a CSL? They make those RWD? Or keep AWD but tweak the tuning? If they make those RWD, okay cool story, now we have epic RWD REAL M3/M4’s with crazy markups and the dumbest allocation/mark up fvckshow second only to Porsche, while the regular one is available.

BTW, I’m not saying the M5 doesn’t drive awesome. It really does. I just don’t want that in the M3. BMW has to leave the M5 and the M3 in completely different stables. There’s a reason they are separate cars.

Lets hope we get a 8000 rpm redline...

Though I'm not sure how they will increase rpm if they go with automatic.

Only problem is how fast the new G20 M340i now is, was it 0-60 4.2. Unless the power gets a hike or weight drops significantly. The X-Drive M340i would be too close to outperform the actual M. Appreciate traffic light GP isn't where its at, but many have this as the yardstick.

As soon as I saw those kind of figures for M340i, its a dead cert G80 is M Xdrive to me.

I understand what you mean, but I don’t think that’s ever been the point of the M3/4, and I really don’t think going that route for it does justice to how the car is supposed to feel.

I don’t have interest in a smaller, less powerful M5. I have complete interest in a car that does its own thing in it own way.

I can already see this bad boy fitting 295/30 or even 305/25 on stock rims, and likely 305/315's on aftermarket ones.

That's my kryptonite... if I can get this thing with some 305's or 315's wrapped around some decent wheels, I'm gonna be hooked.

That's why ideally it would be an option... I totally get why you'd love RWD only. At the same time I would love AWD.

Traction issues on the F80 (bone stock) make it very fun to drive but difficult to make full use of the power in real world driving. Especially given the 3 TC settings of massive intervention, ever-so-slightly less intervention (US mdm), and "have fun keeping this baby off the curb" (off)

It shuts off and converts to rwd, so who cares, if its lighter and better and drives better then the F8X ill take it

BMW factory called me today to ask about the satisfaction with the new car. Among other things, mostly positive, I told them that no manual and no RWD-only in the new one means no sale for me. I told her I’d go Porsche.

The thing is, Porsche can make very responsive and fun AWD cars with manual gearboxes, I just don’t trust BMW to not turn it into a mini M5, which I absolutely do not want.

And for those complaining about lack of traction in the F80, I say spend more time at the track and less time on the forum.
