Thats the gamble you play with a $40,000 motor.

Hot damn! GT4 motor costs $10K less. I guess the two turbochargers and it's cooling components make up that differential.

Gonna call up Car Bahn and gauge how they stand behind their warranty.

It could be much worse. The E63 AMG long block, crate motor, was $77,000.

Exactly. I only know because my buddy bought his E63 for $27,000 and modded it, of course, it started knocking, and he took it to the dealer. They quoted him the $77k for a replacement long block.

Hey bro, ran into this old post. Do you still have this controller?

I’m debating getting it and adding the factory warranty with it as well. I’m at around 7k miles and wanna up the power a bit but nothing crazy. Still a daily driver

Thanks

I'm having the exact same thoughts as you are. My local dealer is a Dinan authorized dealer so they're advocating for the Dinan controller.

Yeah because they make money off of it. You’re better off going full unlock and tune imo

Well, sure. I'm not oblivious to the reason why they're pushing Dinan.

And better to one isn't better to another. I'm looking for just a little extra while maintaining the piece of mind of the warranty.

Dinan PCU is an excellent option in this case, but keep in mind that whether you use Dinan or another tune, the warranty case remains the same.

If the part damages the car, BMW will not fix it for free, regardless of who tuned it.

We do offer the PCU with an added Dinan matching warranty if you are willing to pay that much more for the extra peace of mind

Thanks, Mike.
I’ll hit you up for a quote. In your opinion, what makes the Dinan PCU a better option in this scenario?

I would not call it better, each option has its pros and cons, and since the varies a lot between brands, value plays a big part in the decision making

My mistake. You did say "excellent" and not "better".

I'm really trying to get my head around how to pick between these two. Realistically speaking, how would someone make a decision between them because they're so similar? I've never tuned a car before and I'm not looking for massive power or to tweak individual settings. I'm just looking to add a little extra and essentially set and forget. Hell, I may end up doing nothing in the end. At this point I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.

I would add the warranty with either for the piece of mind.

I can give you my opinion on which tune i would pick, but just to be clear are you comparing between Dinan with warranty vs Dinan without warranty or Dinan with warranty vs Carbahn with warranty?

I would appreciate that. I'm comparing both with their respective warranty options.

both retail around $2250 , advertised power is the same. warranty info is the same.

if this is they way you want to go, i'd check for the best deals on both and get the cheaper option

I just bought the Carbahn Stage 1. I'll update in this thread as I go.

Update 1: Installed. The bottom plug connection was a pain but I finally got it. Followed their installation video and all good so far. Performance increase, according to the dyno graphs, is at the higher rev ranges and I can't really try that locally. Track day coming in two weeks.

Update 2: Driven at COTA. When you look at the HP and Torque curves you'll notice the improvement is for >3000rpm. I can't do pulls where I live so I don't have enough throttle experience at that range that I could tell a difference unfortunately. Car pulls like crazy either way. You'd think 10% would be noticeable but sorry, I'm no help there. I was hoping for a few mph on the back straight - but technically the car is still limited to 155mph so I'm not sure if that's a factor until somebody tells me how "smooth" the limit is. I regularly get to 155 on the back straight and have to brake, so not sure if it smooths acceleration out at 145-155 but it's likely. I'll try to dig into my Laptimer data to see if the max speed between turns is higher but I don't know if I can compare the speed at 100m past turn 11 for example. It was also quite wet with only a few dry runs this weekend.

I did get the Dinan PCU with the warranty option installed by my local BMW dealer. There's 93 octane where I live and I run level 5 all the time. I also tweaked the boost by gear slightly. It's just what I was looking for. Car pulls much harder than before and is a blast to drive - not that it wasn't before.
