Metel folding roofs ruiend BMW's?

Do you think made a bad decision going for a metal roof for the 3 series and also the new Z4?

I don't think they made a mistake by making the 'verts a hardtop (it's just the natural progression of where technology is going) but I think they should still offer a "soft-top" option.

Why the hell would you want a soft top when you can get a hard top?
This is the only reason I would get the convertible. being as the soft tops, look horrible with the top up. and for a lot of people thats most of the time.
hard top actually looks awsome with the top up.
the 3's anyway.

That's your opinion. I know plenty of people who find soft top 'verts aesthetically pleasing. Personally I think the lines of the E93 look bad in comparison to the E90/E92.

+1 There's no flow to the roof lines of the E93 in comparison with the E92.

Yes this is all opinions,
however most people would opt for the hard top addition for thier soft tops if it were not so expensive. there is a reason for that.

and agian all opinions, but I find the lines of the hard top look nice, I actually think they look better then the coupe lines.
the only lines I dont think look better are on the trunk.

I can understand why they did it for the 3 series (not my preference though) but the Z4 should always be a rag top!!!

I did a car survey a few months ago.

An interesting question was

"Do you consider a vehicle with a hard top a convertible?"

also

"Do you consider all convertibles to be only soft tops?"

Not sure why they asked but something is up.

The E46 is my favorite vert. Never liked the E93 vert, especially with the top up. Down it looks ok.

One thing for sure, when they fail, I would want a cloth top since it can be closed manually.

I think all the rubber seals used to seal the hardtop roof will fail just like door seals and leaks will prevail. As long as you are leasing an E93, I would not worry about it though. I don't see it as a long term keeper.

Would anyone buy a soft-top option screen porch?

That said, yes, for the auto-x enthusiasts, the extra weight is a drag of the PRHT.

They need not buy a convertible if that little bit of performance is an issue.

so again, hard always works better then soft.

hard > soft without a doubt. Though the performance hit is a bit higher.

Exactly. I don't really get the point in buying an E93 M3. I mean it's heavier than a M5/M6 with a lot less power. Maybe people buy them for status? Waste of money, but whatever it's not my money.

What times do these cars put down?

First, it's cheaper than an M5 and M6.

Second, some people love convertibles.

Third, for those people that love convertibles but want a fast car, it's faster than the E93 335.

I don't see where the confusion is...

I happen to think the soft top on the Z4 is very classic. Its what roadsters are all about. Audi keeps the TT with the soft top. the s2000 as well. The metal top is great and all for weather and sound deadening, but to be honest, i think the metal tops should be an option, like what chrysler does with the awful sebring.

I prefer the metal roof vert, you get the best of both worlds and the life span on the canvas top is a lot shorter. The roof line looks alot cleaner with the hard top as well.

Also like the security of the metal roof against canvas!
