Track wheel sizes?

What do you guys run for dedicated track wheels? It looks like at least some 18s will clear the iron brakes, so I don’t see the point in paying the 20” tire premium.

Apex 18s or 19s depending on your use case and choice of tire. My square 18s do clear steel brakes but it’s tight, and rock scrape does occur. That’s why some pick 19s. The Apex wheel fitment guide is essentially Bible category.

I called Apex yesterday and they suggested 19x10.5” squared, with 285/35/19, which is where I was leaning. They said use a 3-5mm front spacer (their 19x10.5” VS-5RS wheels have 18 ET). They also recommended camber plates, and said the cooling vents inside the fenders will likely rub at full lock when backing. That is easy enough to fix, though.

This is the direction I went with 19x10.5 ET15 and intend to run 295/30s

From what I gathered, 18s are doable but close to the rotor clearance.

Got camber plates as well. Install pending, observed some cars before headed in that direction.

I got 19x10.5 front and 19x11 rear from Edelweiss. Fronts have 285/35 and rears 295/35. Very happy so far.

Out of curiosity, what’s the “fix” for rubbing? Spacers?

The fix is to either trim the inner fender vents, or replace them with a setup that makes more room for the tire. I went with a kit from Ali Express that was a shade over $100 delivered. Others have reported them being easy to install and seemingly well made, but until they spend more miles on cars we won’t know how well they last.

I did Apex 18x10.5 with 305 Nittos. I’m lowered on Dinan HAS. Using the recommended 5mm spacer there are no rubs and I didn’t need to trim fins (I did it before the wheels/tires arrived).

If you do 19x10.5 with 285 or 295 tires I suspect no trimming at all will be needed. If your tires don’t have blocky shoulders then the spacer might not be needed either.

My old Bridgestone RE-71R were great on road+track so I’d try the RE-71RS on the setup above.

I previously ran a square setup of 19x10 (ET16) with RE-71RS 285/35/19, which worked well for a handful of track days. I would recommend this setup for the occassional HPDE, and if you're looking for a taller Overall Diamater for street driving.

To help accomodate the G80's heavy (track) weight, I made the switch over to 19x10.5 (ET12) with Kuhmo V730 305/30/19. The shorter OD made the car feel more planted overall, but especially around off-camber turns; steering response improvement was also noticeable.

The minor downside to running a 305/30/19 square setup is the more rugged driving feel outside of the track.

suspension setup:
KWv3 set to full stiff front, medium-high rear
Millway camber plates set to -3
Millway monoball thrust-arm bushings

I'm selling my forged 19x10 285/35/19 for a good price if you're interested.

Are those the blue ones on fs? Seriously considering. I’m gonna hit about 15 days this year (up from 3 last year lol) but only recently switched to the g82. I ran the kumhos on my e90 and thought they were excellent, but re71s are a solid starting point too.

I’m running a similar suspension setup — millway camber plates at -2.75 front, -2.1 rear and millway monoballs.

Yes, they're the same wheels. RE-71RS are the better 200tw tires, but V730s are more economical and not too far off from the Bridgestones.

made a table of available track tires for the (Apex) wheels i'm considering, thought it might be helpful for others.

note that some of the recommended tires i couldn't find them available in the specific size, not sure whether it's just tirerack that doesn't stock them or there guide might have an error.

On 19” wheels, I think 325/30 rear tires would be better fit, especially if one goes with high rear spring rates.

I'm leaning toward a square setup too, probably 19x10.5.

I plan to use the same wheel set for track tires and winter tires, so 10" or 10.5" looks best. 275/35R19 has Pilot Alpin 5 and other good winter tire options that staggered doesn't — or are backordered to 2026.
