I hear you but that makes multiple steps at that point just press the screen. The click down is obvious move but it doesn’t do anything.

that would be better. But with the shortcut, you can just use the controller. Push it up to bring down the shortcut menu, scroll, click to open, so you don't have to use the screen and can be done on the fly

Unless you are using Apple CarPlay. Then you have to exit to a bmw menu first (hit home) then do that. Irritating.

but still fairly easy to do without touching the screen while driving

Agree its definitely an oversight in software design. But you can as mentioned above add climate control as a shortcut and with a push up on the Idrive controller you can enter climate without touching the screen.

I'm honestly surprised at how often people seem to change their climate settings. I can't remember the last time I had to do anything (apart from adjusting the seat heating).

It wouldn't bother me as much if there wasn't so much loading time after hitting climate control menu. I suppose we all got used to how fast our other touch-screen devices have become, so it seems unacceptable. It's just a bit annoying, but I can live with it. I'm not one to change climate settings much beyond temperature, but I am constantly going into the menu to sync up the driver/passenger, or menu-diving to change the back seat to colder when the dog is in the car. A sync shortcut button would be excellent.

I have to check it the next time I'm in the car but I can't really remember any long loading times. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but setting the seat heating (or cooling) takes 2 seconds for me. That's why I don't quite understand why so many people are upset about it.
And I agree, buttons like before would be more convenient, but I still find the effort very low (for something that I also don't need all the time), which is why it surprises me. |

I like to use heated seats without fan on. There is no preset for that. So each time I need to fiddle with climate controls to make that happen. Not having heated heat as a stand alone option feature / button ( like heated steering wheel) is my only real gripe with ID8.

seems like a pretty big jump in raw processing power.

In terms of raw processing power, it does look to be quite a jump. Passmark has a slightly lower speced Snapdragon at around 4x the power as the (probable) Atom X7-A3960 that's in the HU4 that we have. Coupled with double the size NAND chip (for faster storage performance) + 50% more RAM, it's no wonder they'd want HU5 for iDrive 8.5
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare...s,-Inc-SM8150P Couldn't get the exact CPUs to compare, not the end all-be-all for benchmarks, but it gives a pretty good idea. I'd expect a good performance boost from anyone in the LCI. |

So I just took my 22 M3 with ID7 to the dealer for service. I got a loaner with ID8. I knew I didnt like the big screen. But I was open to ID8. After using it in the loaner 3 series, I dont think I would live with that crap. TOO much disco and the layout is just horrible IMO. I feel for those who have it. No thank you.

I'll skip 8/8.5 and pray for a good ID9 with AI or something...lol.

8.5 and 9 are the same, visually. There's just differences in screen ratio and underlying OS things, but the functionality is identical. We'd have to wait until iD10 before we get any meaningful changes.

You can't just look at core performance and make a judgement call. This is an x86 chip compared with an ARM chip, clock speed is basically irrelevant. That's why I looked it up on passmark, which is completely synthetic and doesn't give an accurate representation of comparison, but it at least gives you a starting point/general idea.

Heres some specs i found in raw power QUALCOM Integer Math 27,801 MOps/Sec Floating Point Math 10,507 MOps/Sec Find Prime Numbers 15 Million Primes/Sec Random String Sorting 13,064 Thousand Strings/Sec Data Encryption 2,021 MBytes/Sec Data Compression 79,736 KBytes/Sec Physics 335 Frames/Sec Extended Instructions 1,829 Million Matrices/Sec Single Thread 1,914 MOps/Sec. You can see a newer Atom, released around the same time as the SA8155P in HU5 actually has even double the performance with the same number of threads, and the core clocks are basically even between the two. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php...+C5125&id=5091 So, you can't just directly look at core clocks and compare. These not even being different generations, but vastly different architectures (x86 vs ARM) makes them basically require benchmarks to give accurate comparisons. |
