Think this could be in your head? Otherwise what do you think has occurred with the car?

Ordered March 2021, arrived in June
42,000 miles and counting. And it's not even my "daily", it splits time. Hey, what can I say, I like driving.

I think we all have fairly arbitrary mental barriers when it comes to car mileage, but these barriers do affect resale values even if they're completely made up. For most people, under 25K miles is pretty new. 50K miles (also where the factory warranty expires) is another barrier. Over 50K is considered "high mileage" by a lot of people, and then anything approaching 100K miles is considered very high mileage and you can expect a big price drop at this level. The G8X platform is new, so it's doubtful that anyone is even approaching 50K at this point, but we'll see that in the coming year. Mind you, none of this says anything to how mechanically sound the car is. Modern cars that are well maintained and regularly serviced could theoretically run for hundreds of thousands of miles without major issues. Often the higher mileage cars are more mechanically sound because the owners kept up with them, whereas vehicles with low mileage may have had a lot of deferred maintenance. There are a ton of people who don't understand that oil viscosity can diminish over time, and will have 2yr oil in their vehicles thinking it is "ok" because they only have 5K miles. But if you're going to sell your car, lower mileage will fetch more money than higher mileage. BMWs are typically driven, but if you head over to the Ferrari boards or even the Corvette boards, having over 20K miles can often be an issue. When there are endless examples of 4 year old cars with under 15K miles to choose from, your 4 year old car with 30K miles is less desirable. My advice? Unless you're a car collector or have some sort of classic, don't buy a car that you're afraid to drive for fear of diminishing the value. It ruins the experience. TL;DR = drive your car |
