I second STek DYNOFlex. I took an fn moon rock to the windshield, yesterday, and it hit so hard, I ducked. It sounded like a gunshot went off in my front seat, and the STek saved me.

It hit so hard, it left a brown streak in the PPF, but nothing happened to the PPF. It didn't peel it back, it didn't nick it, nothing.

And 300 miles over, on the break in... BMW isn't a fan of you overshooting the break in period, but oh well.

Given the ETA for a new windshield is 3 months, once I finally get a new one I will certainly be doing this. As someone else said these things do seem weak as hell.

Well gentlemen (and maybe ladies), we did just over 750 miles of the trip yesterday and landed in Knoxville, TN last night. Slept a solid 6 hours, and will make the last 12 hours of the trip today.

I must say, the G80 feels incredibly stable at higher speeds. We were maintaining 100 MPH last night for a good two hours and it felt like we were doing 35.

The laser lights are awesome, and the high beams light up the night sky.

For all of you who are concerned about the Carbon Buckets, anyone who tells you they are uncomfortable might have some health concerns to deal with, because after 12 hours of being in the car, both my friend and I had zero complaints. Hell we both fell asleep in them and woke up fine.

Hope to get some more scenic shots today given all of yesterdays driving post DC was done in the dark.

You weren’t scared of getting pulled over at that speed? There wasn’t one cop for 2 whole hours?

Nice!!! sucks about the windshield but it was obviously a weak one and failed your methods of testing

any concerns about all the highway miles affecting the engine break-in (maintaining a constant RPM for too long)

Looks like fun! I almost did the same when i took delivery of my M3. Almost drove it back from Colorado to NJ. I ended up transporting because it was march, still cold for such a long drive on summer tires and rock chips. If it were summer time i would definitely drive. You only live once!

In Virginia we didn't see a single cop and could maintain a good pace the whole way from 1am to 3am. Probably will be different today.

I've been trying to fluctuate RPMs but as you point out it isn't super easy. Not sure if it will mean anything but I'm doubting it…

What's your gas mileage been like?

Sorry about the windshield....

Same thing happened with my wife's 2020 GLC43 AMG coupe. She broke a windshield within the first 500 miles after taking delivery, and couldn't get a replacement for over a month and a half.

About the carbon buckets, comfort wasn't an issue with me when I tried them out, but I felt the padding in the lower seat portion was very thin, and was concerned about my ass falling asleep on a long trip. I also was concerned about too much "road feel" from the buckets and the fatigue you can get from it on long trips as well. The carbon buckets are definitely more confining than the Sport seats, and I get a little fidgety after a couple hours on the road.

To bad about the windshield. When I took Euro Delivery in 2018 I caught a rock in the windshield in Sweden. When the car arrived in the U.S. the VPC could not find a replacement part in North America (heads-up display etc.). My CA made a call (in German) and 4 days later I had my car. The part was flown in. The Euro Delivery pkg insurance was zero deductible and the VPC even replaced two wheels I had curb-rashed in a mid evil street in the Czech Republic.

Picking my new car up in a few days and am going to see what options my insurance company has for windshield coverage.

There is some slight glue distortion. My friend got in the car and we went like 5 miles and he noticed it right away. But he's like a 20 on the OCD scale. I'm pretty bad, but I would say that it's about 98% optically clear.

The imperfections are random in every installation, so there is nothing in particular to point out. The glue sticks the sheet to the windshield is the distortion, apparently. But it's nothing that I even see anymore. It really comes down to how good the installer is.

I would find someone that has it if it's concerning to you. It's been completely worth it, for me, especially since I took that moon boulder to the windshield. There is no doubt in my mind, that if I didn't have it, the windshield would be trash.

But for me, it's not something I even get in the car, and notice anymore. I'm slightly far sighted, and I'll be 50 in a few years, so maybe that helps. I don't wear glasses on a daily basis and it's not bad enough to have to wear them while driving.

For me, the protection far outweighs any issues from getting it installed. The only time I even remember it's there, is when something hits it and I say "Thank you STek."

Does anyone happen to know a contact at North America that may be able to help me out? The crack now crosses 75% of the windshield and is right in the drivers FOV. You can drive the car, but it's getting a point where you won't be able to faster than I expected.

It seems pretty ridiculous that this could happen from a tiny rock chip.

BMW should really have some windshields available for these cars especially if they are aware of how crappy this glass is. I really don't want to wait 3 months to be able to get the car inspected and registered in Texas.

I can't tell if I am being a pain in the ass or if this really is a shitty situation on BMWs part.

Enjoying this thread and trip report. Before driving my M4CX 500 miles home end of May I called insurance to doublecheck what my glass deductible is. I've hit a blown semi tire and deer on break-in drives, but no glass chips.
Looking fwd to more updates.

GEICO was super easy with this. I submitted a claim about 20 minutes after it happened with a photo and they instantly accepted it.

Getting it replaced will be the hard part now.
