Given those conditions, I'm not surprised by traction control kicking in. Winter tires are built to operate at colder temperatures AND handle ice and snow. They should feel less planted out of corners and during hard acceleration, particularly when it's 50+ outside.
My take was going to be the temps too. You don't really even want winters on until the temp is capping out in the low 40s. At those high a temperature winters lose performance similar to how a summer will lose performance in the cold. The rubber composition just won't properly grip the road. I'd be curious if the problem still exists when it's <30-40 degrees out.
Last two days have been 35-45 degrees as a high. On my shorter highway trips, no DSC interference in regular 4WD the few times I opened the car up. Tire temps were below 60 when fully warmed up and running.
Sounds like they're working then

Put my 829m wheels on the other day. I don’t love the look but they’ll do. I’m going to order spacers in the next couple days for sure

Should look good with spacers. What % tint is that?

I'm currently torn between a square set of VikingContact 7's, and Alpin PA4's. Basically, do I want to go for performance winters, or do I go for studless snow & ice.

I'm in Westchester N.Y. but frequently drive to the Bronx and sometimes LI. The roads range anywhere between completely clear, to icy death (the part of the Bronx I frequent doesn't get ploughed often and my old folks' driveway/area is seldom shovelled). I don't particularly care for spirited driving as my main objective driving during the winter/snow is getting from point A to B safely and securely, sometimes with my 7 month old daughter, but there is a need to be able to manoeuvre because of garbage drivers that are everywhere. So I don't care too much that Alpin 4/5, Sottozero, and Blizzaks (the non WS90 at least) will handle better per sé. I did however, read that studless snow/ice tyres actually don't grip as well in completely dry pavement above a certain temperature? I suspect 85% of the time I drive, the roads will be fine, but the last thing I want is to be stuck that one time the roads are bad on performance winters, or look for grip on dry roads while on studless snow/ice tyres. Can anyone shed light on the grip on dry pavement on studless snow/ice tyres?

I had a set of Alpin PA4's on my old GT3 and they were pretty good, but when I think about my family now - I don't care for the performance aspect at all and just want the tyre that'll keep me/us safest.
I think you want performance winters like Alpin 5.
I'm in Brooklyn BTW. If the snow is that bad you will be taking it super easy and the Alpins will be fine. If it's just cold and below freezing which is most of the time in deep winter, I think the performance winters will have more time when they work better. As soon as you have a couple of slightly warm days, those studless snow tires are probably going to not perform well would be my guess.

+1. I have Alpin 5s as well, and I expect to navigate deep snow occasionally, once winter truly arrives. So far they've been performing fine in 'light' winter weather conditions akin to what you typically encounter in NYC metro area.

Tire Rack gave the Alpins good reviews on ice, and I believe you and your family will appreciate less road noise when pavement is dry or just wet (relative to more aggressive studless snow tires).

Agreed, they are doing excellent for me in one of the coldest capital in the world, both in dry and snow. Studless snows are too much of a compromise on this car when the roads are dry.

My Alpin 5s encountered their first real snow today. Cut through 6" powder like there was nothing on the road. Drove over packed snow/ice (in 10°F temperatures) without any slippage or sidestepping. So far, so good!

I saw this! And while the Alpin 5's are definitely impressive, the issue with them is availability. I'm looking around and things look very bleak as no one has 'em in stock. I could get the 829M's with the Alpin 5's already on them, but I really don't want the 829M wheels since they're cast wheels and the roads I frequent are seriously awful; not to mention my disdain for their styling.

I just placed an order for them through Summit Racing, they are estimating a ship date of 1/24, which is very seriously not likely to happen if at all. However, if things don't look good by then then I'll just opt in for a set of VikingContact 7's since they're readily available and live with them this season. We just got our first bit of snow around my neck of the woods and I feel like this cold season will last well into March, so I really don't wanna get caught with my car's metaphorical pants down.

Stock 19" (fronts) on all four corners with 275/35R19s (as noted much earlier in this thread).

I think you meant 275/35/19! Would be amazing if the G8X could do 275/40 up front.

You mean that 275/40 won´t fit? And how about 265/40? I´m planning for next winter (my G80 is on order with delivery in May) to keep the 825 type wheels and put on 265/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rear winter tyres.

It is very unlikely that a 40 series profile tyre will fit with 19" wheels regardless of the section width. I personally cannot confirm but have been told it will not fit. If a 40 profile could fit, many of us looking into winter tyres late in the game wouldn't be stressed at all.

I'd be all for trying it out but with a baby at home + non-stop work, it's tough to give any time to experiments when my G80 gets delivered to me. I'll try fitting a 40 profile next year if no one's done it yet by then.

Installed Nexen Winterguard Sport 2's on my oem 18/19 and couldn't be happier. Quiet ride, decent grip in the recent 6" snowstorm we had and under $700 for all 4. I can't complain

My car is coming sooner than I thought and I will need a winter setup. Tire rack has nothing in 19".. the 829's are decent, but a lot of money for a regular looking wheel. Any advice will be appreciated!

Lol welcome to the club! If you'd like to keep stock wheels then you'll have to scour the web for either Pirelli Sottozero 3's or Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4. TireRack doesn't have them, so you'll have to resort to eBay and other sites.

I agree that the 829M's aren't very appealing, on top of the fact that they're cast wheels. Unfortunately you won't readily find Michelin Pilot Alpin 5's anywhere else.

Personally, I am purchasing a front set of 19" 826M's to run in the back, and am waiting to see if I can get Alpin 5's from SummitRacing and if not, I'll be running VikingContact 7's for this season.
