I feel like the answer is obvious right? BMW will tell you very clearly EXACTLY "what an M car is" after you've answered one simple question they'll have for you first: What are you interested in buying?
If the answer is something like an M340i or a M550i, BMW will tell you under no uncertain terms that they are full on M cars. However, if you're planning on buying an M3 or an M4 or something, they will be absolutely certain to let you know that those are in fact the only true M cars. And why the hell not? Speaking out of both sides of your mouth is gonna sell cars. Oh, there's a logical disconnect here that's starting 18 page long flame wars on the internet amongst people who have already paid their sweet sweet money to the company?? Oh darn. Look, I'm sure they'll come over here and explain how two opposite things can both be true....just as soon as they're done counting all this cash. |

Imagine if they used a lowercase ///m for the m performance models so we wouldn’t have these types of threads anymore

I have the X5 M50i. Is it an M car? Of course not.
Does it confuse the hell out of people who don't about this stuff? YES. My sis-in-law when she first saw the rear of my car, earlier this month: "oh wowww, you have the M one"...I just smiled and nodded lol Last edited by mmm50i; 11-18-2021 at 06:40 PM.. |

There's always something better. You can drive an M car and a Ferrari pulls up besides you and you're the small kid on the block. And then you're died in 30 years and no one remembers any of this crap.

I had an M235i. Lots of people called it an M2. I never bothered to correct them.

No reason to correct people who are incorrect (even slightly) regarding an insignificant matter. They were just showing you they were aware you had a BMW. Not knowing exactly which BMW you had was unimportant to the conversation.

Why does this same question always get asked?
1. If it were the same, it would be listed under the M car lineup but it is NOT. 2. Who cares what others think? Just don’t go adding extra badges. Why? See #1. 3. Get the car you like and can reasonably afford. For a non-track car I never felt the need to pay up for the extras power, forged rims, big brakes or limited slip. But I do prefer the looks of the M sport trim over standard which is why I usually opt for that package. And yes for track, having M car is great because I’d spend more trying to retrofit many of those go fast parts or find creative ways to stuff wide rubbers. I saw a 440i with the m performance pack today. I had to do a double take. It has an m on the rear of the car. I'm fine with the cars that actually have an m in the model name, we can debate whether they're m cars. But the m performance pack with an m badge is not right.
