While I wait for my 16 week build to hopefully be delivered December 29th I've decided to build a new garage for the incoming FDG g82.
I moved into this property 3 years ago and have been doing extensive building work (90 year old home in Glasgow, Scotland), I've never built anything so it's been a steep learning curve.
When I purchased the property I inherited a rotten 10m x 3m wooden garage with an asbestos roof. At the moment I'm building a rear extension to the house and decided to knock down the garage and build a home for the new M4.
I enjoy seeing projects being built and new cars being delivered on this forum so I decided to share my journey.
New garage will be 7m x 3m with sectional automatic garage door. I'm putting 3m wide aluminium bi-fold doors at the side so I can see the car from my new extension that will have 5m sliding doors.
Everyone thinks I'm crazy because I'm spending the money I put aside for a new kitchen. Am I ?

Surely the money for the bifolds would have been better spent making the garage wider? 3m is pretty narrow.

I still want to have space in my garden so wider isn't an option. 😊

Best wishes on realizing your garage dreams! We renovated our home 3 years ago (finished a few months before the pandemic hit), and I couldn’t be happier with how our garage ended up. The biggest change was adding a 3m x 5m shed in order to deciliter our 3-car garage, such that it houses only our vehicles and dog kennel. Oh, and we added climate control (heated and cooled), lots of LED lighting, and plumbing (hose bib and utility sink). Our dogs stay comfortable while they watch Dad wash the car indoors in the dead of winter.

Sounds like you've got the perfect set-up. I plan to have loft space that's floored with drop down ladders to keep all the things I don't need often out of site.
I don't have enough garden space for a shed.
Just looking forward to having a new place for the new car 😊

OP does this mean you will be able to see your whole car from the inside of your home?? Man I'd love a window from my house to my garage. I keep having to walk out to the garage to stare at my car. Would love to do so from the comfort of my couch or dining table...

Lol. So I'm not alone in wanting to see it from inside 😊
I'll see 3m of it so that's going to involve changing the direction I park in the garage now and then to keep me happy 😎

I'm a little confused by the pictures. I presume that the half-finished cinder block (that's what we call those large cement bricks) is the new addition (to be covered in stucco), and the house that's about 2m from the new garage is your neighbor, not your house?

I'm confused because I don't see the driveway, how you will get the car into the new garage.

I also agree that it's too narrow, but that's obviously been planned and you are sure that you can use it. I like the idea of you being able to admire the car from your home.

In the USA the general rule is that money spent upgrading the home is best spent in the kitchen, as far as return on investment is concerned. I suspect that the new garage will be less expensive and bring you greater pleasure, and that's what really counts, especially if you don't plan to move soon.

I like the brick that you are using, it looks very nice.

Doing it all yourself? That's very brave of you. So far it looks good! Best of luck.

Yes so the garage is half finished, to the left is my neighbours house and the driveway will run parallel to their driveway (separated by a wall)
The extension is first couple of pictures with the flat roof, it is lower than the original house so I have a 3m wide opening that will step down into the new extension. I will be putting a kitchen in, but I still have my original kitchen in the old part of the house. I guess I was just joking around saying that I have used that money for a garage instead of a new kitchen, however I have put the garage in front of the kitchen in my schedule because the car comes first 😂
I stay in the city so the area is build up, I have limited space in the garden as I'm surrounded with properties. I did live in California for a while and you guys all have big garages, it's normal here for a single width garage, but I've left 2m at the rear for cabinets and worktop.
Will put a couple of pictures up of the location and the finish I intend to do on both garage and new extension. The extension is 10m x5m and is one room open planned (kitchen/dining/ living area)
Hope that makes sense 😊

Well... it helps. But the second picture does not appear to be your house, either it's a darn good rendering of how it will look, or it's some other house with an addition similar to how yours will eventually be.

It's not just California, but an American thing to have large garages for those of us in the suburbs or in rural areas. Especially compared to Europe, where it seems that more people live in actual, old, congested cities built long before anyone thought of sailing west for a few months.

Yes. Second picture is just to show the cladding I intend to use on the extension and garage.

Starting to take shape. It's been a difficult weather window over the last few weeks regarding building work but I'm happy that I have got to where I am.
Bifold doors should arrive in the next week, sectional garage door maybe this year, electrical work I will take care of and have installed a underground duct (for AC, data and wi-Fi)
Apparently my individual M4 is still on schedule for December delivery so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this.

I hope so. I'm more worried about actually having a car with all that's going on in the automotive world 😂

Will you be able to open the doors and get out with it in the garage? When I got my house that was something important to me. Mine isn't huge or small, it's 11.9 x 6.8m (39' x 22.5') but is made for 2 cars + a golf cart and I have a small work bench. I know space is more limited for you but I hope it works out. Please keep this updated!

So maybe I should add that the garage I demolished was the same width as this new one but it was 2m longer. Car is 1887mm (2081 with mirrors) so I have loads of room left 😂😂
It's somewhere to keep the car protected rather than a workshop and it's perfect for the space I have. Also, if I need to access the passenger side for cleaning I can open the bifold doors (this will be useful but not required. I'm just happy I have space at the rear as I have 3 bikes (I keep them in the house they are very expensive) and it lets me work on those without taking the car out.
I'll keep the post updated as I go, who knows maybe I'll actually have a car when I update next 🙏🏻

Ps/ the size given at the start of my post was approximate and I quoted the internal width. The exact internal size it 3090x7000mm 😊
