Dear BMW-
I vote with my wallet, I have your M3 and I have a 2020 Volvo V60 T8 PE. So you figure out what I would have bought! |

As someone who got into the M3 game during E92 time, not a big fan of the new front design, but if BMW offer a G81 in MT I would get one in a heart beat...

No. The cost of homologising and certifying the model for the US is not cost effective for the amount of units required to be sold.

Again same reason. US customers more or less prefer the X3.

I love bmws and Audis. A m3 wagon would be pretty much a instant purchase. But right now really only Audi is competing in the segment at that price point. No clue if it's profitable for them, but they won my business. The A6 is a great wagon, and with a few mods feels sporty. Here's to wagons, and hoping brands give enthusiasts in NA some more.

Caddy offered a very hot Corvette Powered "V" series 6MT station wagon a few years back. Ran the Ring at 8:12. Sold OK but no big winner.

Where does the $20M cost for federalization come from? Multiple vehicles need to be submitted for crash testing plus emissions testing (which may be covered by the current M3/M4 certification). Beyond that most of their certificates/processes are already in place.
BTW Porsche makes on average $17K per vehicle and imports around 1500 GT3's. That would make the GT3 a break even car for them at best assuming $20M to federalize. Would BMW make a lot of money by doing a limited edition M3 wagon? Definitely not. Would they have a halo car with a highly vocal/influential and hardcore customer base? Absolutely and this is critical to any company. It is probably worth more than you think to them as well. Charge $10K more for the wagon (bringing the per car profit to approximately $16K), bring in 1500 over the life of the G8x and they would break even and maybe even make some money. The problem for a lot of the manufacturers is that they over estimate the wagon market and then flood cars here. Make a desirable car and ensure that production is slower and slightly less than demand and they will have a winner. |
