I'am really interested to see a review by Chris later on. He refers to the F80 as a near perfect car that could do with a 4WD. I wonder whether the G80 will be able to better the F80 experience. There are a couple of specifications that could trouble that, like weight and torque threshold. For the time being, I'am still expecting frankly that the F80 remains king. Time will tell.

For the first drive prototype 'reviews' they had the journalists drive f80s and the g80 manual back to back and they all concluded the g80 is a considerably better driving experience. Granted they may have only let people that they knew would give a favorable review in on the test drive so I'd take that with a grain of salt lol but that definitely shows some confidence on behalf of bmw in the fact that the new generation will outperform the old setting up the test drive that way. I think once people look beyond 0-60 times the F80 won't hang with the G80 and many of the people not making the jump to the new generation will be based on looks alone. Pretty interesting Harris likes the F80 I think most of the auto community saw it as a bit of a letdown

Its always nice to listen to Chris, even I disagree strongly on 1M being more exciting than M3 E92. Driven both cars numerous times, I would choose the E92 over 1M every day.

The F80 was indeed a let down the first ~18 months of its sales period. It was very snappy and it could bite his driver giving the feeling it was working constantly against him. After that initial period, the set-up changed and as from that moment, I only read (very) positive reviews actually.

I'am not a gifted driver, but the M4 competitions I drove all felt like razor sharp and as from the go, I felt connected with it! Much more than with the F90 M5 actually.

Having one of the first batch F80’s I can firmly say that the snappiness as an undesirable aspect does not apply to the MT cars. It was only a complaint with the DCT. For me the agressive TQ spike is one of the best parts of this car.

I never doubted the car was great to drive. It should be. I like DCT more but it's a clear progression. But to me, and I feel like a lot of people, looks matter. It's hard to live with a car you can't look back at after you lock it and admire it. Every angle of the G80 is great BUT the front. Sadly, if there is no bumper solution it'll be a no go for me. Which is a shame because I want to support the manuals and buy one but I just can't get past the bumper. The g20 is a nice looking car. Maybe a tad big but so is my F30. But unfortunately, the design of this car has lead me to go towards an M2C.

Completely agree. My 2015 F80 6MT has been a total riot. So much so that I've had zero desire to upgrade until now.

The problem I've always had with these reviews is that they always want to tell you how fun on a car is on a back road or at that track, but that's missing half the point.

The 1M is worse in every regard when compared to the M2. You cannot say the same about the E92 over the F80.

That engine was the last special motor they made, and the chassis it was tied to was no slouch. It was also much more comfortable than the 1M, and better looking. And on the track, you really had to drive the E9X. it took a lot of driving to make it go fast, but that's what made it so much fun.

Everything he said regarding the M3 was pretty much spot on. I definitely agree.

The AWD version of the G80 might be enough for me to upgrade from my F80, but I will likely wait and see how the LCI turns out. I know my '18 M3 Comp was more planted than my '15 M3 -- BMW really does make continual improvements to the platform with every passing year.

Chris Harris must be by now one of the most entertaining and respected auto journalists in the world. He's a rare combination of being informed, entertaining, a great driver and an owner.

I've adored my F80... but its very very far from perfect. Car is incredibly traction limited and even in MDM you lose sooooo much power to try and keep it stuck to the ground. I'm all in on the idea of even a bit more power, hopefully a bit better chassis (I find the F80 needlessly harsh in certain situations) and AWD. It'll be a game changer on this car, and it should be a blast to drive. I just need the looks to warm up on my a bit more.

M3 is the right size. I want to want an M5 but its just too big for what I want.

I agree with this btw. CH is at the top of the game for me right now. Not sure there's an opinion out there I'd put more weight behind and I like that he's transparent about any biases he may have.

In the age of 300 youtube auto "journalists" he really does stand out.

That would be my go-to here in the US if they brought the G81 over. Would be the perfect daily

CH is definitely my favorite source for BMW reviews. He isn't afraid to give his honest opinion. It probably helps that we have the same taste car models.

there's no doubt in my mind that the chassis will be better. just based on how much better the drive of the g20 is over the terrible f30, it can only be better cause that is the starting point of the M car.

The raving about the front axle vs the F8X has been consistent from the people who have driven it so far so yes, the chassis should be much improved.

It's also just more nose heavy with wider tires.

Well, how about they would instead decrease the power output and add lightness? We wouldn't have to have overweight slushbox M3s with xDrive.

Implementing AWD to a very powerful front-engined RWD car is not a real solution but rather a bandaid because the industry and most customers want power and speed without any additional effort required.

He's definitely one of the very few UK journalists who like the F80.

Most people also haven't taken it to the track and are capable of driving near the limits of the car in DSC OFF. 😉

His is tuned so a torque monster and he likes a ragged edge. I agree S65 is way more my thing vs N54 in any state of tune.

Which speaks even louder about the improvements since more nose heavy often works against the crisp turn in and exit a great “front axle” must have.
