More confirmation yesterday on manual transmission....with some great quotes, IMO.
https://www.topgear.com/car-news/fra...staying-manual “There is no point for us putting a manual gearbox into an SUV, but we will continue with a manual in the M3 and the M4. It’s a small percentage of sales – with the biggest community in the United States – but it’s something very specific that sets us apart from our competitors, because not everybody is capable of doing it. Even more so in future.” |

Oh FFS!! I guess people will always find something to bitch about. I have zero problems with the rev match. If you daily drive this car, rev matching is such a treat. Sure I'd like the option to disable it if possible, but we already have that in sport+. So, ... ? I'm just giddy that we will be having another gen M3 with a true 6 speed manual. It's also sad to see the DCT die and go to a converter, as good as the ZF8 transmission is. It dilutes the character of an M car. |

It concerns me simply because it's a ridiculous notion to me for BMW to effectively punish the MT buyers by offering us less power when the F8X's MT has proven that it can easily handle as much power (...or more!!!) than the projected figures of the AT ///G8X. It's even more annoying because the power bumps are mainly software revisions, so why not just make all of the cars the same!?!? As for being overpowered.....that applies for nearly every performance car on the road, and who doesn't like more power?!?

You definitely don't have to be a race driver to heel and toe properly. With enough experience you can get near perfect even on a race track. Me driving at a slightly wet mini track:

6MT F80 here. I love it and would consider G80 LCI as long as it's not ugly and too quiet with OPFs.
One gripe I have with the gearbox is that the 6th is too short for highway use. Other than that, it's a joy.

Is this the dinosaurs thread?
In all seriousness though, if they offer a 6spd (hoping for 7spd), I'm waiting until the last year of the model line because the M3 after the G80 will certainly NOT have a manual transmission.

Unless the car has a manual it’s just a method of transporting your ass from point a to point b... automatics are completely useless in being fun regardless of whether it’s a dct or an automatic... can care less about how fast it shifts, automatics are for soccer moms! I had all of them, E60 M5 SMG (fun for the first week), F06 M6 (fun for the first 2 weeks)... currently F90 M5 (old fart’s rocket ship, only fun momentarily when you floor it)... the last epic car I owned that put a smile on my face every day I drove it was an E60 545i with a 6 speed manual! Honestly, I am having more fun driving my manual 1.5 turbo chinese Chery Tiggo 7 in Shanghai, than driving my F90 M5 back in Canada... go figure!

+1. And with today’s torque monsters zero need for tighter spacing on an MT. A cruising gear for mpg savings? Maybe on autobahn but I never missed one here.

OK, here we are, the car is released we know what we are getting. 6MT is here
I am used to the grilles, I have looked at the weight and crossed/compared it to other vehicles, I am not only comfortable with the G80, but generally have excitement about the car mainly due to the 6MT. Really happy in the pedal placement seen on video and also happy to have the ability to to turn on and off rev-matching. I have to give BMW kudos for that feature. If my wife drives the car I want it on, but I would never have it on unless stuck in heavy stop and start traffic. Now, we also have the additional Manual Sedan coming soon from Cadillac CT4&5-V Blackwing. They are confirmed for manual and carbon fiber buckets, so after the fear of not having any manuals to choose from in (sedan form) we have 2 solid options. |

I spent a few minutes reading through this thread confused before I realized it was revived from a year ago (i.e. I was wondering how 6MT enthusiasts could not know these answers yet?!?).
Anyway, regarding wives (or other significant others as I'm sure a true female 6MT driver would out-drive their husband and most of us on this forum any day of the week)... I got the DCT in the F80 because my wife drives the car on occasion, but I regret that decision most days of the week. She hasn't driven a manual in about 15 years (prior to me), however, her ex said she was absolutely clueless driving it and basically just stayed in 2nd gear all day long to get around town (she admits this as well). I mean, she's a different person now, has some decent seat time in the F80, has gone through some autocross courses with an auto, and will have done an M-track day. I could also probably set aside a couple of days to get her up to speed to at least be able to drive, but how horrible of an idea would it be if I went with a 6MT in the G8x and had such a person who would want to drive it on occasion? I would plan to lease, and I think if I pay for the care+ package it would cover the clutch as a wear item for the first 30,000 miles (right?), so that helps, but does rev matching, anti-stall, hill-holding, and all the other goodies make you guys feel okay enough to have someone less experienced drive the car? I'd probably worry more about her rolling into someone, leaving it in neutral to park (but I trained her to use the parking brake in our DCT and other autos already), or hitting someone while attempting not to stall, than I would burning up a clutch or doing something to the engine. Let me know your thoughts... and if you find out I moved forward with the 6MT and you are reading this in the future while in the market, feel free to PM me to know what VIN to avoid.

It reaffirmed my longstanding belief that BMW reads these boards and sometimes even reacts to these boards in a direct way. |

Remember that crazy email/survey they sent to us, asking us in 10 different ways how the lack of 6MT would impact our willingess to purchase future cars from them?

In fact, I plan on using the rev-matching to teach my oldest to drive as none of my other cars have that feature. I would advise you to go with the manual and after a couple drives with the car, your wife will feel comfortable, IMVHO. |
