I can hear the price of F80/F82 DCT going up just by having the rumour of "8-speed" on the next gen.
Also, don't forget to give an option to permanently turn off the stupid rev match on 6MT.

and go onto hinting us such possibilities on "lower" trims to see if it could work. Bring down the empirical cost and retain the decent reception. In their mind, all is good. It's okay to read the market, but it's not so cool to be consumed by it. A market leader often brings innovation that no one imagined; sometimes crazy, others ingenuous. With its innovative engine technology presumably from recent F1 successes, I strongly feel AMG division has started to take that position. BMW tries to market their way out, but you should change your exterior designers first Back onto the topic, here's my premature speculation on G80 M3: BMW chassis development has generally been exceptional so I expect that to happen on the next generation as well. The problem is the engine and the transmission, if they decide to go with 8-speed ZF. -Engine There is nothing remotely exciting about continually degrading rpm range, and "trickle down" effect of the DD first, track second attitude of M division lately. It used to be the other way around, one of the reasons why engineers specced 10W-60 for maximum protection under high rpm until the latest models. Squeezing everything out to make M original, naturally aspirated engines (S85,S65) before tightening euro regulations was a genuine gesture that all enthusiasts loved. I don't feel that in the recently launched M5. Maybe it is just me. -Transmission ZF 8 speed on F90 M5 is rated at 7500 rpm MAX and BMW knows it better than anyone that it breaks down after continuous redlining near 7400 rpm unlike DCT rated at 9000 rpm. I fear that use of this transmission could diminish the potent S55's rpm range. I still think BMW will stick with DCT for this reason, but MxDrive is a sore eye that will make the use of torque converter somewhat inevitable in terms of cost. On a personal note, I'd gladly sacrifice empirical max torque in exchange for max output near 8500 rpm and lightweight chassis in an M3. BMW most likely has taken the hint on customers' demands from sales figure of M2 as well. What I'm seeing is though more focus on electric vehicles nowadays seeing that BMW joins Formula E starting next year. Quote:
There's a reason why Huracan and GTR run RWD only on GT endurance series: weight. A 1600kg AWD G80 M3 (hypothetically speaking) would be quick in straights no doubt, but it will never have the same handling characteristics nor even close cornering capabilities as say, a 1350kg RWD G80 M3 with less unsprung weight, less rotating mass and better aerodynamics for maximum downforce. I believe these features are what M purists call for, not a stop light boy racer GTR copycat.

What is the reason they have gone back to a sliding rear caliper vs solid ones on the current car? If it is an e-brake issue, how were they able to overcome that on the current car?

Does anyone know what the S58 motor is all about? Is the timing chain in the rear like the b58? I'm guessing it will be similar architecture to that but not sure...

WTH would BMW share the M3/4's engine with the X3-M? Is this a twin-turbo variant of the B58 -->S58? I'm hella curious on this one, HELLA! New flares look great

WTH not? M5 and X5M/X6M share the engine (it's pretty much guaranteed F95/F96 will have the same exact drivetrain as F90), sharing S58 across 3/4/X3/X4 is only logical.

The same reason why they share the M5/M6/M8 engine with the X5 M and X6 M. Also the same reason why Mercedes-AMG uses one engine across most of their products, and why VAG is doing something similar too (RS5 engine in Panamera S, Cayenne S, upcoming S6/S7, RS Q5).
And that is, it keeps costs in check. Now that high-revving, naturally aspirated motors are no longer used in these segments, there is no need to develop separate engines for passenger cars and light trucks. Furthermore, the people who buy this type of high performance vehicle today - i.e. not a dedicated sports car - are primarily concerned with the performance figures, not with engine specifics. In other words, turbocharged engines are very versatile, so they can be used in many different types of applications. |

Word of caution: at this stage of development what you see is not necessarily what you'll get. Go back to the photos of F90 in 2014, see how they compare to the finished product.

AWD always helps when you have lots more power than grip - look at WRC, Rallycross. That is not the case with an M3 just yet, but if it had 600BHP perhaps it too would need AWD to make it work well.
