2023 M3 idrive 8 thoughts
So I was just advised that starting in July of 22 BMW is changing from idrive 7 to the new idrive 8! It’s the full glass screen for the instrument cluster and a 14.5 inch screen for the “infotainment “. Single piece of glass and it looks amazing.
My issue is that I have an M3 Competition that was ordered 4 months ago and will be here in about 3 weeks. Roughly 6/1/22…. The second I pick this thing up it will be “old” and I’m having an issue spending 100k on a car that will be the “old model” the second I drive off the lot. Question, would you wait and place a new order? It will probably be 6 months before I see the car if I’m lucky. I’m having trouble even finding a dealer that has an available allocation. I’m totally stuck here. It’s my first M and want it to be special. Feel like I need to reorder. Or do I buy and drive while I place an order for a new one and sell??? Jesus help me! Any suggestions would be appreciated!! |

I wish since BMW will be placing ID8 in many new/updated vehicles, they also redesigned the dashboard so when viewing the screen from the passenger side, you wouldn't see that ugly leg holding the screen up.
Looks like an afterthought and gives a cheap look to the interior. |

Do you have another car if you don't take delivery of the M3 you ordered?

Keep what you have coming! ID7 is great. Besides, everything is eventually old. Just enjoy the car now (or in 3 weeks) rather than waiting what will be WAY longer than 6 months. Most dealers are seeing 8-12 months wait times.

Given the choice, I'd rather have regular climate (and other) controls with ID7 than ID8. The residual value on leases keep dropping so BMW can keep padding their profits. For example, the Z4 M40i residual dropped about $1500 since January and the interest rate increased. Rob |

Pay more for less
My 2022 G82 order was canceled so I’m ending up with the 2023. I was told all G80/82/87 after July 2022 will have the new idrive 8. Personally, I don’t like it for a mid to high end performance car but I appreciate your conundrum. In my opinion, performance cars deserve a separate gauge cluster and that’s my main issue with it. I don’t think it adds anything special to the M cars as it was initially designed for the EVs and quite honestly that’s where it belongs, imo.
That said - if you want the 2023 with idrive 8 you’ll have to go through the process of obtaining a new allocation and waiting for production. Every dealer within 100 miles of me is out of its initial allocations already. It’s also $2.7K more on the base price of every model and the options are more expensive. Spec’d the exact same way, my 2023 is $5K more than my 2022 would have been. And according to the 3 dealerships I spoke with, I’m “lucky” to be getting it at MSRP. |
